Got Facebook? Your Business Page Is Growing Up. Don't Miss It!

There are some significant changes happening in your Facebook Fan Page. (You do have a custom Page, right?)  You can upgrade now, or wait until it happens automatically in a few weeks. But you should definitely take advantage of this wake-up call to review your Page and how you are using it.

(By the way, forgive me if I use the terms "page," "fan page," "custom page," and "business page" synonymously. Same things.)

I won't list all the changes here but will give a few highlights, and will post more details over the next few days.

Visually

The layout of Fan Pages is changing to closely resemble the layout of personal profile pages.

You'll see photos across the top. I'll write more on how to have some control over those in another post (but know that you can't control which subset of your photos are displayed or in what order. This potentially changes each time the page is refreshed.)

Your list of "Tabs" for navigation is now on the left side below the "profile picture." You can (and should!) still have a default landing Page for visitors who haven't "Liked" your page yet, and ideally this page should capture email addresses just like your website does. It does, right?

Functionally

The best of the changes for us online marketers is the ability to post "as your page" in other areas of Facebook. This gives you a very powerful way to promote your page directly to your target audience. To do this, go to "Account" and "Use Facebook as Page." This will bring up a list of pages you administer. Choose the Page whose "identity" you want to use. Then on that page, click on "Use Facebook as " and you're in business.

You can now be notified by email when a visitor posts on your Page. This is important for you to be able to interact with your Page visitors. ("Edit Page"->"Your Settings.")

Facebook now let you publicise yourself (your personal profile) as the owner of the Page, and gives you the ability to "feature" other pages that you choose. These settings are really a nice addition, too, and are available from the "Edit Page"->"Featured" page.

You Should Be Using a Facebook Page!

Seriously, this is important for your online presence. Do yourself a favor and dig into this whole Facebook Page thing. Especially with the new changes, this is a powerful and completely free way to promote yourself online.

Please don't hesitate to contact me if I can help you with this.

At first I didn't like the new format (CHANGE, AGAIN!) but now I love it. I like that I can "be the page"...makes everything easier!

Have been checking out the pages and changes as I go.

It's the adjustment part that is fun for us as well as our fans.

Enjoy the day

Thanks, Shannon and Don, for the comments. I'm not a fan of change for change's sake...but these changes are good.

I do have to go figure out what pictures to upload to my pages now, though....pictures weren't shown anywhere before, and now we have the banner across the top which isn't very appealing on its own. I'm off to clean that up a bit. :-)

Nice write-up Fritz! Great point that you can still have a default landing tab even though your custom tabs aren't quite as prominently displayed.

I totally agree with you! Agents should have a "Page". Why not it's free!!! I love that I will be able to post from my Page! It gives you yet another free way to remind everyone your a Realtor!

Mike, thank you. The landing page for new visitors is like another mini-website we can set up to advertise our businesses.

Tiera, yes, free is good. :-)  There is another reason to have a Page and not just a profile, which I will blog about sometime in the next few days.

Hi Fritz - Great tips.  I finally got my Facebook Business Page about a month ago, and it has been a learning curve ever since.  Guess you can call me a Facebook Newbie!  : )
