Not every loan should get modified. Think of it this way. some home owners were tricked into a negative amortization loan, they are paying way more than they could afford to pay to stay in a home that is only causing them stress. At what point do you decide to sell and move on.
I definately think you should try to do a modification if you can afford the modified payment and if your income is stable. If you can not afford the modified payment then why put yourself thru the stress and hassle.
If you do a modification you want to make sure your not paying fees you do not owe. You have the right to send the lender a QWR and ask for an accounting of the ESCROW fees. You may be surprised to find double biling.
If you decide to go forward with a Short Sale you should know that you may qualify for Cash for Keys, this is money from the lender for moving expenses for the home owner. Make sure your realtor lets you know about this.
