Mmmmm, Frostop!

FrostopOn a recent Saturday morning, I took my family on a field trip to Huntington, West Virginia.  We visited the Pink Bridge at Ritter Park, had lunch and shopped at Pullman Square and then on the way out, stopped at Frostop for a root beer.

There is no better root beer.  Period.

Frostop takes me back to my teenage years, when cars were a novelty and we had nothing but free time and lots of friends to share it with.  One sip of that super creamy root beer took me back in time.  Funny how a taste can make you feel free, with the whole world ahead of you.

I would say they should bottle it, but I think they already have.

My Tall One loves root beer.  She was so impressed by theirs that it wasn’t even funny.  It is seriously delicious.  I promised to drive her back up for lunch sometime.  It’s an experience you shouldn’t have to live without.

They still have car hops at Frostop.  Guys in yellow shirts were taking orders and delivering trays of food right to the cars.  (Usually we don’t eat in the car, but I would make an exception for this.)  It’s a totally different idea for kids raised in our current fast food age.  People will SIT and eat, even though it’s kind of a drive through.  It’s a little more intimate than a restaurant, because you’re still enclosed in your own car.  You get to break the rules and eat in the car.  COOL!

Just driving past the big revolving mug at Frostop makes me feel good.  This relic from my past is still going strong, and now I can share it with my kids.  Life is good.

Old fashioned Americana is alive and well and waiting for you to visit.   Get off I-64 at Hal Greer Boulevard, head towards town and it will be on your left.  Just look for that happy spinning mug, you can't miss it.

Sarah, I love the root beer, the memories and all as usual but I have to ask...are you sure you're not older than me?  When you were a teenager cars were a novelty?  Girl, when I was a teenager cars were something to avoid getting hit by on the way to school!

Sally likes root beer!!!  Wish I could send you some -- this stuff is the BEST!!

Mom - I remember going to A & W.  :o)  I also remember I liked going to the grocery store because as soon as we walked in, cold air would hit me.  Aaah!!

Tricia - We got our Frostop root beer to go, so no mugs ... and now I'm wondering if they serve it that way!  I'll just have to go back, won't I?  :o)

Sally - She's a pretty cool person.  :o)

Jeff - It's a date!!  Then we'll go chase squirrels at Ritter Park, OK?  :oD!!

Tracey - LOL, you threw me off!  What am I reading?  I just finished Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk (and I was a good girl, I blogged about it but it was off topic and it went to my MySpace blog where it belonged!!  Aren't you proud?) and I just started The Language Instinct by Steven Pinker.  I read ANYTHING.  What are you reading?

Maggie - Hmm, I guess I worded that wrong.  Maybe, "When having the car keys was a novelty"?  We are far from everything around here, you have to be able to drive.  No cabs, no passenger train, no public buses ... you drive or you don't get there.  When you reach that teenage driving age WOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!!!!  Tall One will be able to drive next year.  I will not be taking it as well as you have, Maggie!

aha!  OK, I getcha now.  Don't sell yourself short.  You'll get through the driving stage alright.  You've done a great job with the kids.  Tall One will do just fine.  Look at who's been teaching her.

When I saw this building in the background of your photos I just KNEW a post was coming about it.   I was DYING  to see what you'd write.  Do they serve root beer over vanilla ice cream?

Maggie - Tall One is easily distracted and is extremely impulsive.  The thought of her behind the wheel does scare me!!

Chris - Yes, they do!!!  I think I'm ready to go back again already!

Tom - Root beer, biscuits, red wine and chocolate.  And not nearly enough exercise anymore!  I must be blessed, all I can tell you.

Cyndee - Do they like hot dogs?  I think I might have to do a tour of hot dog stands.  WV is famous for it's hot dogs!

That is a great place!  Been there a few times.  I once drove from there to Charleston to take a few of those tasty treats to my co-workers.

Well, my husband and I were Google-ing Frostop, because my parent's own the one in Huntington along with my Aunt and Uncle.   I was so pleased to read your blog!! My grandparent's opened the Frostop in 1957 and it has been in our family ever since! I am so glad that people enjoy it as much as we do! I remember my Grandfather, who died in 1980, taking me in for my first rootbeer and sitting me on the counter and watching for my reaction as I drank it from the frosty mug.  I loved it and still do.  My children love it and my two-year old calls it "brown Rubee!" We make it today in the back as they did 27 years ago, and 33 years before that!! Come back as soon as you can!!

Sarah, I was a huge A & W Drive In fan in High School. Went through withdrawals when I went away to College in D.C..

No root beer has ever tasted quite as good.

I drive by Frostop every day on my way to work. I really like it a lot, and I stop by whenever I can. Places like this are so rare these days (another drive-in I enjoyed was Lynns near my home town of Bluefield, which is also still alive and kicking IIRC), and it's good to see them doing well. They remind me of simpler times in America that I sometimes wish we could go back to.
