Google Webmaster Tools now available to Google Analytics users

Want to see statistics about your website that Google collects and uses?

Do you have Google Analytics installed on your website?  If so, now you can easily add Google Webmaster Tools.  It will show you things like:

  • how often Google crawls your website,
  • if there are any errors detected by GoogleBot,
  • what pages of your website are indexed by Google,
  • what keywords Google considers significant for your website,
  • links GoogleBot has found to your web-pages from any other web-sites,
  • what queries were used when people have used Google look for your website,
  • and more...

The linkage from Google Analytics to the Google Webmaster Tools is new.  Until last week, it was harder to get access to your Google Webmaster Tools data.

How to setup Google Webmaster Tools

Log-in to your Google account, then go to:

https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/

  • Add your website,
  • Verify using the "Google Analytics" option: Link to your Google Analytics account.
  • After a week or so, check back for data...

You will be able to see key data that Google collects about your website, uses to position your website in the search results, and will show to you only.

George, it said it couldn't verify my website. Have any ideas where to go from here?

Make sure you are using the same google login.  Check the UA-nnnnnnn in the GA plugin with the GA login account.  Also, you need to use the newer, asynchronous mode for the Google html code.  Put that newer GA code in your HTML, then make sure to access (refresh) your website, then check to make sure GA is collecting stats, then try the verification for Google Webmaster tools.

Google Analytics changed the plug in HTML code, I think it was several months ago, or longer.  The new code is required for the Google Webmaster Tools to use the Google Analytics verification.

Great helpful post George.  I also starting using Google to shorten my url's with their version; it tracks the activity and I really love that!

@ Cindy: I also like the bit.ly URL shorterer for it's tracking ability.  Bit.ly also has some unique features, such as posting one "short URL" to a "bundle" or list of related links.  You can also post different short URLs in different places (each can point to the same target page) and see what's getting the hits, when, and from where.  It will even generate a QR code for your URL, and track those, too.  (We're seeing good results from QR codes on flyers and postcards.)
