Scott's Thoughts: Your Life Beyond Today's Stress
What are your plans when the clouds pass?
"Don't be pushed by your problems; be led by your dreams."

If you've ever ridden a motorcycle, you probably know that the bike tends to go the direction you're looking. If you're in a tricky corner and you're looking at the ditch instead of where you'd like to exit the curve, there's a good chance you could end up in the ditch.
I find it's the same way in life. If you're zeroed in on your problems, they loom disproportionately large. Before you know it, they're pushing you around, guiding your thoughts all the time, and eating away at your energy and positive attitude.
It's easy to allow stress to put you behind the 8-ball, but there's a genuine hazard in letting where you are now dictate where you want to be in the future.
The next time you're feeling the crunch, try visualizing what it's going to be like after your most pressing stresses are solved. What will you do? What are your plans? What's the next step beyond your immediate worries? Really take a moment to picture it. The day you wake up and the troublesome listing closes, the business debt you've been carrying is cleared, the health problem that's been nagging you is better.
Don't sell this type of visualization short. It can be much needed mental "oxygen" in the room when the smoke's getting thick. It's also a great thing to do with clients who are facing dicey situations such as difficult financing, short sale complications, or hard negotiations.
I'm not suggesting you break out the incense and ask them to go on a mental journey with you, but you can ask them questions which will help them to see a life beyond their immediate stress. Ask about their plans. Ask what they're going to do when the "dust settles."
It's a subtle mental shift, but it can be quite helpful as a stress management tool. Try to be what you are pursuing, not what you're running from.
