Idaho Real Estate:  No Farms, No Food

The American Farmer is a breed that has undergone some significant changes in the past several years.  New equipment, government demands, FDA regulations, etc. make it more difficult to farm today, than it did 50 years ago!

Granted, we have a lot more technology these days, which can help in the production of farming.

My hat is off to the American Farmer!

I remember a time when farm ground was being bought up and developed into housing tracts. Developers and real estate investors were knocking on the doors of farmers, asking if they wanted to sell their land.

Many farmers took them up on the idea, sold out & made a great amount of money for them to retire on!

Others held out and kept on plowing through the fertile soil, providing needed food for our tables.

Today, we joke about knocking on the doors of foreclosed tract homes and asking if they want to sell their property for farm ground.

Idaho real estate is home to the famous potato! There are more potatoes grown in Idaho than in any other state in the Union. We are also known for our vast sugar beet crop, having one of the largest sugar factories right here in Nampa, Idaho!

If you were to put a Nutritional Facts label on the standard Idaho Potato, it would look something like this:

Don, supporting farmers is a must.  They too are affected by the down times for the past few years.

Wow, Don, I didn't know they grew sugar beets as well.  Is it a "rotating" type of crop?  I grew up in Iowa where the crops were rotated every few years, growing different types of crops on the same land - each using different nutrients and leaving behind a nutrient the other needed.

Between Idaho and Washington we've got the potato market cornered. Idaho $750 million, Washington $625 million and 3rd place goes to Wisconsin with $250 million. You want fries with that?

Deb, i love the farm ground, seeing the rolling fields and multiple pivots!

Juli, crop rotation is one of guys favorite subjects around here! Depending on the crop, 2-3 years is about normal.

Glenn, McDonald's Fries is great for Idaho!

Five Guys is one of my favorite restaurants.. and I love that they name the farm in Idaho where the potatoes came from.
