Facebook to Replace FBML Code

When Facebook changed the Facebook Business Page platform last week, they quietly announced that FBML code would be replaced by a more complicated Iframes format.

In case you don't know, Skittles FBML PageFBML code is what makes those great landing pages that encourage your visitors to “like” and  to interact with your business.

What does this change mean for your facebook business page?
  • In the short term, it means that any existing FBML coded pages will continue to work.
  • On March 11, 2011, new installations of the FMBL app will not be allowed.
  • Expect Facebook to gradually phase out all FBML coded pages at some point in the future.

The good news is that Facebook's IFrame Tabs that will provide even greater flexibility for the Page owners.  Expect some new resources to help non coders adapt.

So what do you need to do to prepare for the upcoming transition?

I suggest that you add several additional FBML tabs prior to March 11, even if you don’t have current plans for them. This will give you flexibility to add more content in both the FBML and IFrame formats.

If you need help uploading the FBML App, give me a call.   For a nominal charge we’ll install it for you.  (If you are in Shasta County call the Small Business Development Corporation  at (530) 225-2770 and make an appointment with Kate, Justin or Jessica)

Kate, I never did find anyone that knew FBML.  I'd love to add content to my FB business page and add some additional tabs.  Is there a good primmer for FMBL?

Good advice Kate. I expect many changes with FB in the near future. In the long run it will provide for greater content and flexibility. I like the new Page format.

Vicki, I do have an excellent resource for you.  I'll get it and post it later tonight.

Doug, I agree.  Facebook is moving in a positive direction for business.

Debbie, isn't that true.  You may want to consider hiring a part time social media consultant help facilitate and manage it for you.

Little too disappointing as I was planning to learn FBML.

If Facebook keeps on changing their strategy every year, where do we go? I agree, these pages may remain effective right now, but there will be a time when they will take off the support for FBML. Then what?

Nonetheless, very useful information, Kate.

Praful, FBML won't go away in the short term and it may not be phased out completely.  Just a shift in focus.  I plan on doing both.
