Mold has been quite an issue here in the Maryland area. As we get more and more foreclosures on the market the mold issues just get worse. It seems to me that because the foreclosure process takes so long to get through, the homes are vacant for quite awhile before the banks can take possession of them and have them winterized. Now, I am not an authority on this subject, but it looks like these people are in dire straights first and get their power cut off before or after they get put out. This creates a domino affect....If the power is out, the sump pump cannot work.....hence the water infiltration into the basement area. After water sits for awhile.....the MOLD GROWS! Even after the bank comes in and gets the home dried out and winterized, the MOLD is still there and is now GROWING! As long as there is dampness, the MOLD feeds on it and keeps growing. Wikipedia explains it well The EPA has a guide to dealing with MOLD http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mold_growth,_assessment,_and_remediation.
If you come across a MOLD issue in a home that you would like to purchase, It is important to have the MOLD tested so that the remediation company knows just what type of MOLDS that they will be dealing with. Have that MOLD REMEDIATED by a qualified remediation company! It is ugly and very unhealthy for your family to live with this air quality. Some MOLDS do not look this bad and can be hiding in the walls. Your home inspector can usually find traces of it and will request that you have it tested. Some in inspectors have the equipment to do the test for you.
