Google always seems to be up to something, which is good. Just recently I noticed something new that they have in Beta. It is Results from People in your Social Circle. After researching it seems as though it has been something coming for a long time. Basically what google is doing is showing some results on the first page that you may be looking for based on your social networking. For example, if someone is following my business facebook page and searches for Hawaii vacation rentals they would get my site on the first page of Google. If they were not following me on facebook I would probably show up around page 20 for Hawaii vacation rentals.
Here is where it gets interesting and I look forward to seeing what others have to say about this. Where does Google pull the information from? Which sites do they give weight to? I went to a computer where I was only logged in to my Google account and my site showed up in the results. Then I logged out of the account and it did not show up in the results. Given that, I am guessing that if you have the sites in your webmaster tools that they will automatically show up. Then how to they determine which page from that site is going to show up? From what I have seen there is no systematic approach to that.
Another thing I do find odd is that I would have thought that by now Google would be showing more Facebook results in the searches. I would have thought that would have been the first step forward in the inclusion of social in the search results.
I look forward to hearing everyones response.
