Some States Considering Canceling Presidential Primary Elections Due to Budget Shortfalls

By

Several states, up to 12 right now, are considering not holding presidential primary elections next year because of their severe budgetary problems. Massachussetts and California are among them.

I say, KUDOS to you for that. Primary elections should not be taxpayer subsidized. They are held primarily for the benefit of political parties where often, except in states like Georgia, voters cannot vote unless they are registered in a party. Yes, sometimes there are local or other state initiatives included, but not always, and nothing that couldn't wait until the next general election.

So, get rid of those state primaries. Let the political parties pay for their own primary, whether it be a caucus or what. And also get rid of those exclusionary rules that make it almost impossible for independant candidates or 3rd party candidates to get on the ballot. We should not be subsidizing political parties either with taxpayer dollars or legislation.

Mike,

I want to see how this plays out.  The two in-bred and corrupt major parties have earmarked state subsidies for a very long time to maintain control and quash alternative thought and third parties.

Mike, I am all for it. If a party wants a primary let them pay for it!

Seems to me that if the tax payers are paying for the primaries, they should have some say in the rules.  So far we don't.

The two major parties have held us hostage for far too long.

I have watched how the Republicans have tried to corrupt the tea party movement folks and the people they support.

Those corrupt decrepit old pols that are the elite of both parties just plain need to go.

Perhaps, they would prefer our Iatola in chef should declare himself reelected. Think of the money we could save cancling the genneral election! May one of the polsters could call 80 Democrats and 30 others and declare the winner.

On the other hand open primaries are an affront to democracy, too. Do you really think a majority of Republicans wanted John McCain to run?

Mike - it will be interesting

Tom - yep

Lenn - I am not looking for something parlimentary, but, this two party system is part of what is really wrong her

Bill - McCain got in through open primaries, primarily. And noboby is looking to cancel the presidential election, at least not yet.

Mike - It looks like the free ride is being exposed. Perhaps an Adult decision is in order. ....Like from the Adults that have to pay the bill

Mike...

I never really thought about this but I tend to agree. Why shouldn't the parties be solely responsible for the expense of determining their candidates.

I like the idea Mike. Why should we fund it?

Claude - now that would be refreshing

Richard - they should be, and the federal funding of presidential candidates should also end

Kevin - simple, we shouldn't, thanks for the feature

It is the two party system that is corrupt and we need to realize that the Repubs are as bad as the Dems.

Nice post! Yes, both parties are very involved in keeping status quo alive and well. They want to remain the only two viable parties, they do everything to squash any other possible candidate from running any real campaign with how they dole out campaign financing, etc. They also keep those candidates from being involved with any major debate. Also, it seems to me that the primary keeps the candidates with the best "new ideas" from getting in. I vote in our primarys all the time, but it is like it is already set up that you "feel like" you have to vote for this evil over the other evil, to keep the worst of the evil out, rather than voting for someone that already has no chance, but is the best candidate.

Mike,

Love it. I say bring back the Conventions where it takes 39 ballots to nominate a candidate. Add some drama to it. :)

Steve - I used to watch those conventions, facinated by the voting process and loved those multiple ballots. I miss them. There is no suspense anymore  at conventions, just like watching another awards show.

I agree. Let the parties pay for their own primaries.  Most of the primaries are just a dog and pony show anyway.  By the time Iowa and New Hampshire have their votes, the big states like California, New York, and Florida don't even get a say.

Rob - there is still a ways to go after Iowa & New Hampshire, 2008 showed that.
