Whoopie Pie War

By
Real Estate Agent with Prudential Lancaster Real Estate

When I first heard about the discrepancy between Maine and Pennsylvania over where the first Whoopie Pie originated from, I thought the dis-agreement would be resolved peacefully.
But the disagreemen seems to be turning into a war with an article in The Wall Street Journal, Maine’s intention to declare the Whoopie Pie the State Dessert, and a rally being held in downtown Lancaster, PA  today, it doesn’t look like the war will be over anytime soon.

“What the heck is a whoopie pie?” you ask. It is a 2 chocolate cake-like cookies filled with a creamy filling that resembles a mini-burger. Now I have had several  whoopie pies in my life including pumpkin flavored cakes and no two whoopie pies are the same.  For me, the filling makes the whoopie pie and the best is butter cream filling not the marshmallow whipped filling.

Hey, we have to have our winter entertainment don't we?

Growing up in the South, we called them Moon Pies. Nothing better than a Moon Pie and an RC Cola!

Just saw a segment on television about this challenge.  I remember these wonderful treats as a child living in Cumberland County, west of Harrisburg.  However, my friends in Maryland never heard of them, so when I was living in Baltimore, I had to make them.  Delicious!

My husband's family is from western PA but I've never heard anything about Whoopie Pies! Thanks for the local info :) Must be a strictly PA thing.

Hi Joyce - As I live in Connecticut, I guess I am in neutral ground.  Why don't all involved come to Connecticut with their respective pies and we can sit over a negotiating table to discuss our differences and pig out on pies?  I would be happy to act as intermediary!

I love whoopie pies! Growing up in Lancaster County I was able to enjoy lots of homemade whoopie pies (especially the pumpkin) straight from our local Amish road side stand.
