Presidents' Day was originally known as Washington's Birthday and was celebrated February 22. The holiday was signed into law by President Rutherford B. Hayes January 31, 1879.
Our first President, George Washington, picked the location of the White House. The first cornerstone was laid October 13, 1792. Construction took place over a span of eight years, at a reported cost of $232,371.83.
At various times in history, the White House has been known as the "President's Palace," the "President's House," and the "Executive Mansion." President Theodore Roosevelt officially gave the White House its current name in 1901.
