Tips for Better Blogging Results - Things I Wish I had Done Right from the Start - Part 1

I invited a friend in Florida to join ActiveRain, and I am trying to give her as much help as I can on how to quickly maximize her blog.  As I was typing up today's "lesson," I thought "this would probably be a good series that will hopefully help others."  So here goes--Lesson 1:

Stairway to the TopWhen you first sign up for ActiveRain, you are given an amazing amount of information--so much so that your head spins!  Where do you start?  Take a deep breath!  If I could go back to the beginning, what advice do I wish someone had given me?

First of all, sign up for courses at ActiveRain University.  I put this off until January 2011.  It was on my "to do" list.  If you want to really know what you are doing, put this at the TOP of your to-do list and get over there right now and sign up!  It takes about one hour of your day on a webinar--the best hour you will spend that day.  Will you understand everything that is being talked about?  Probably not, but you can take the classes again as you develop more of an understanding.

ActiveRain University Training Calendar

Before you take the class, however, I would suggest that you download two things if you don't have them already:  Firefox (Mozilla.com) and Scribefire.  At least you will then be familiar with the platform that will be used in class!  Don't feel that you need to learn Scribefire before you go--just have it installed and available on you "Tools" from Firefox (automatically installed there) so you are not completely confused.

That is enough for today--take the classes!

Good tips for new members as well as some of the older members that have not yet learned to use Firefox and Scribefire.

New recruited members also need to be warned about the new higher cost of an outside blog. New members are receiving immediate phone calls to solicit upgrades.

Hi Mark - I was rather self taught until January myself!  I could have spent the time more wisely had I gotten ActiveRain University training done early on!

Great post.  Yes, Steve Graham is great.  He packs a lot into those classes.  I took 3 of the 5 and plan to retake one or two of them when I have some time.  I started beg of July and took them the week around Labor day weekend since there wasn't too much going on there.  It was good time to do it since a) i wasn't so busy w/ appts and b) I knew some stuff so it was more meaningful.  I think taking them after a month or so is ideal time frame.

I still haven't done scribefire yet, so maybe this is my impetus.

Chris - I wished so too :)  Your intro to the series I'm sure will be great and informational as your part 1.  I have learned so much here and that is what AR makes a special place to be :)

Hi Debbie - Thanks.  It is good to know a little before taking the class, but if you are feeling lost (like most of us at the beginning) it is probably a good idea to take the class, work at it for a while, and then take it again in a month or two.  Scribefire is super easy to download.  All I really use it for is my font size (a touch bigger).

Hi Petra - There is so much to learn and so many willing teachers!  It is just so overwhelming at the beginning that I thought as long as I am teaching one, I might as well spread the information around!  : )

Good tips for newcomers, Chris. I think I floundered around AR for 6 months before I finally got it! Nice of you to help.

the scribefire thing didn't work.  Having downloading issues...I'm using a different computer as my regular got really messed up.  I think this one has older firefox and I tried to update but something isn't working right.

Hi Toni - We all floundered for a while as we tried to figure everything out all at once!

Hi Debbie - Aren't computers wonderful?  : )  You are overloading your computers, but at least you truly understand blogging!

Good advice Chris!  I've had the webinars on my to-do list for some time also.  I've taken one webinar, but haven't managed to attend any more.  (BTW, hit the suggest button!)

Hi Donna - Thanks for the suggest!  I think one of the most important ones to attend is the Monday webinar, but everyone of them is fantastic (and Tuesday really goes along with the Monday class).  Steven Graham is a wonderful teacher!  Try to move it to the top of the To Do list if time allows!

Great post Chris. I wish I could attend the Webinars but unfortunately they don't fit into my schedule. I have been learning a lot as I go along though. I have to admit that blogging and SEO stuff is not my true area of expertise but I am enjoying all the new knowledge I am gaining.

Hi Karen - You do learn a lot as you go along--especially when you are determined to do so!  You never know where blogging may lead you . . .

And thanks for the Firefox/Scribefire tip.  Last week I posted a question about AR Safari friendliness that went into a black hole.  Downloading now.
