In spite of looming rain and cold, a sold out crowd gathered at Park Imperial South in Palm Springs last Saturday evening for a home tour, poolside cocktail reception and a discussion with architect Barry Berkus, A.I.A.  Park Imperial South marks its 50th Anniversary this year and having the condominium project's designer on hand made it a highlight event of this year's Palm Springs Modernism Week.

Nine homes in varying stages of rehabilitation and remodel were open for tour to attendees and the modernists were excited to see the renovations of many of the units. Several units had been completely redone with new kitchens and appliances, upgraded bathrooms, redesigned patios and new flooring while other units retained original design elements such as range hoods, cabinetry and intercom entertainment systems. One objective achieved by the tour was the demonstration of the complex's design longevity both interior and exterior as well as the versatile functional floor plan of each unit.

Following the tour was a poolside cocktail reception with Barry Berkus, A.I.A, architect of Park Imperial South. Mr. Berkus circulated in the crowd and spoke to attendees on an individual basis before making a public speech later in the evening. Berkus stated that it was the highest honor to be acknowledged by those who live within the architect's dream. Homeowner Association President Jimmy Verrett spoke about living in Park Imperial South before home owner Craig Hammond discussed his current Park Imperial South restoration project. Hammond then introduced Berkus to the reception guests.

Berkus began as an intern for architect William Cody before opening his own firm and eventually designing Park Imperial South at the age of 25. During his speech Berkus recalled sitting at construction sites for Lautner projects before developing his own unique design vision. According to Berkus, Park Imperial South was experimental in both design and construction. The distinct roofs were constructed in Oakland before being transported to Palm Springs where they were lifted into place by crane.  "I wanted to design a space for people who could not afford an architect," said Berkus of his design for Park Imperial South.

The development was constructed by The Trudy Richards Company and marketed as resort condominiums. For the past 10 years the homeowners association has been restoring the complex with new landscaping, new entrance sign and restoration of lighting and wood paneling to each home's entrance. The Palm Springs Preservation Foundation has granted funds to continue the restoration projects of Park Imperial South and all proceeds from Saturday's event will directly benefit the ongoing rejuvenation and renovation of the development.

I would have enjoyed being a part of that tour Randy. I'm happy to hear about the restoration project as well, it's important to preserve special projects like this. Thanks for sharing.
