Tips for Better Blogging Results - Things I Wish I had Done Right from the Start - Part 4

Seals"I have written my first blog post, but no one commented!"  This happens.  What is the best way to get others to comment on your post?  Go comment on their posts!  We all appreciate comments, and I try to go to the most recent post of someone who comments on my post and return the favor.  This is how you develop friendships (didn't know that would happen when you signed up for ActiveRain, did you?  It will).

Maybe you feel a little intimidated about commenting on a featured post because there have already been 49 comments.  Again, go to the Blog link at the top of the page, and see who just posted (about 2 seconds ago).  You might even be the first comment if you are fast!  Be sure to read the post before commenting, not just the headline.  Please don't write the same comment on every post you comment on.  When someone "cuts and pastes" a comment, they are not likely to have people flocking to their blog to comment back.

Really like what someone has to say in their post?  Subscribe to their blog so you can see it every time they post something new.

And another quick note:  Write a reply on the comments that people leave on your post.  Sometimes you will get 10 comments right off the bat, so it can be a bit much to reply on each one, but try.  AND go back to see if others have replied on the comments that you have left (you can do this by going to your home page under "Your Messages" and clicking on each of the comments that you have left.  I got an idea for a post yesterday by reading a reply to one of my comments!

Great tips Chris. My blogroll keeps growing and it is always great to discover someone with great content you never saw before. I also make it a point to reply to the comments on my posts. All the best. ~ Doug

Thanks for sharing this advice, a good reminder. This is the basics....slow going at first but when friendships start to form, you get more reads, more comments, and more of a sense of community.

Hi Fritz - It is so important to take ActiveRain one step at a time or you quickly become overwhelmed and get nowhere.  Hopefully these small tips per day are good for folks!

Good advice for new and old members. It is also good to comment on the localisms of others since many do not get any comments. So, when you are returning a comment, select a post with fewer comments if possible.

Comments are even better when a picture is included.

Very good advice Roy.  Another boost for the localism is to mention what they are writing about by name--this helps get more juice out of Google!

I like the part about commenting back, Chris. I think that's very important in developing friendships that develop comments. (I expect a reply back on here :)

Hi Toni - Of course I will reply!  : )  I might even go comment on your blog today (maybe I already did; or was that yesterday?)  And this is how friendships happen.  Have a wonderful day!

Commenting on other blogs is like fuel to the fire. I couldn't believe the exposure it gets you! I love it! It can really open the doors. I make sure I try and get my 10 good ones in for the day.. and usually go way beyond. I also go to every blog of someone that just subscribed and thank them personally .
