It Is What It Is...

Lately I've been hearing this phrase a LOT.  I don't know if people are saying it more or if I'm just more cognizant of it because I'm more aware (I even saw it in a TV show over the weekend!), but what I DO know is that every time I hear it the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and I want to hit something!

Here's the scenario: Somthing has just popped up in one of your deals, you call the other agent to try to brainstorm a solution and they say "It is what it is."  They basically just told you "I don't care enough to try to change it"

Where would our world be if that was our answer to every challenge?

Problem: Caveman #1 "Caveman Starving!"   Caveman #2 "ugg...Is what Is"  Both Cavemen DIE!

Alternative Solution? Learn to hunt, fish, farm and gather berries!

Ancient Times Quote: "The World is Flat"  Everyone's response? "It Is What It Is"

Alternative Solution: Get on a boat anyway and discover America... where I live today!

Problem: Hitler's killing everyone he doesn't like... not just the Jews.  Can you imagine the world today if everyone had just said "It Is What It Is..."

YOUR ASSIGNMENT, SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO ACCEPT IT:

The next time you hear someone say "It is what it is..."  I want you to correct them and say "It is what you make it" or even "It is what you let it be"

The real estate market's bad... "It is what it is"

OH YEAH?

Then why are some people doing just fine in this market... I personally closed 24 transaction sides last year WHILE running the office AND teaching CEU classes throughout Florida... all without an assistant!  So when people lay down and say "It is what it is" I GET MAD!!! And so should you!

Thanks for listening to my rant.

"It is what it is" is an outlook on life (it's a very poor outlook on life). Glad to know there are others who think differently, are doing/saying something about it, and are impacting the lives of buyers and sellers in our markets.

Just imagine if I had said "it is what it is" when dealing with a few difficult buyer predicaments over the past several months:

  • a 0 score borrower wouldn't have closed on his purchase in January;
  • a borrower who's ex-spouse filed BK in 5/2009 and let their marital home (where they were still joint borrowers) go back in foreclosure in 4/2010 wouldn't have closed on traditional mortgage financing for a new purchase in January; and
  • a borrower who made one late mortgage payment in 6/2010 wouldn't have been able to close on the purchase of a new home in November.

Your current circumstances can always be changed unless you have the submissive attitude of "it is what it is". For those IIWII folks: just get out of our way so we can make things better. Keep up the can do attitude, Andy!

Thanks Nancy! Great Attitude!

And Melanie, it sounds like you had some tough deals that you probably wanted to give up on more than once... but you stuck with it!

Andy, good analogies. I hear that phrase often as well, and I guess when I heard it, I'd just think the person had given up. My biggest peeve in life are people who complain about something over and over, but never change anything. It is what it is, 'IS' only if you let it...

That has always made me upset, too.  It goes along with "we have always done it that way".  And, when the slow down first started "nothing is selling".  Poohey.  So I have to work harder to keep deals together because another buyer is not right around the corner, so I have to call more sellers to find one willing to list at a reasonable selling price, so I have to sell four times as many houses to make the same amount of money....So?  Anyone in this business who thinks they know it all and have seen it all, has not been in the business long.  ....or won't be.  Ruth
