Presidents Day - A time to reflect

By

Today is President's Day.  While it is not a designated "name" for this holiday, President's Day represents to me, respect for those men who helped found and shaped America.

We used to celebrate President Abraham's Birthday and George Washington's birthday separately.  But over the course of the years, it has been yielded to more recent names and I believe diminished the respect of some of our Founding Fathers of this country.

Banks are closed, the U.S Postal System is not delivering today, Libraries are closed as well as the schools.  This should be a time for Americans a chance to reconnect with our past and those who transformed and molded our Country.  But instead of focusing on  President's Day as a national holiday to honor these men in some form, shape or manner, most are out there doing the President's Day Sale.  You know the ones.  10% more off between the hours of 7 a.m. and 11 a.m. on President's Day.  Americans will probably spend more time sifting through deals then really understanding what today is really, truly about.

George Washington was considered a shy and quiet man in private life yet it was this same man, as President, who in 1794, personally led the militia that put down the Whiskey Rebellion.  He knew that failure to end the insurrection would render the Constitution and the notion of Federal Supremacy - impotent.  Known as the Father of our Country, he had no real formal education yet I believe his wisdom and knowledge was based upon perception.  Washington never formally joined a party because he was against them as he felt they could cause great division.

George Washington was a no-nonsense type of man.  He proposed to his wife after knowing her for three weeks and meeting her twice.  He oversaw the creation of the First National Bank.

His Personal Mottos:

  • Deeds.  Not words.
  • For God and My Country

I was amazed to find out that George Washington was elected to his first term as President with an unanimous electrical votes!  How the system worked back then was whoever got the highest votes was the President and the next most highest, John Adams, would become the Vice-President.  George Washington served two terms as President of the United States and then voluntarily retired and went back to his home until his death, two years later.

"Associate yourself with the men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation; for 'tis better to be alone than in bad company."

"The name of AMERICAN, which belongs to you, in your national capacity, must always exalt the just pride of Patriotism, more than any appellation derived from local discrimination."

My ardent desire, and my aim has been, to comply strictly with all our engagements, foreign and domestic; but to keep the US free from political connections with every other country, to see them independent of all and under the influences of none."
