I Don't Want To Be Surviving The Serengeti - I Want To Overcome It

By

There's no way I am going to write some blog about the Serengeti.  Even the naive, the never cynical, and the trusting Boy Scout (me) can see this is a shameless attempt to market a book.  They have hooked on to a medium with thousands of people and want them all to pass around the title, post their "perspectives," and link, link, link.

What's the hook?  Oh!  2,500 points!  Well, there's a shock.  Oh!  And if you post further onto Facebook there's another thousand points in it for you!  That is shameless marketing, shameless I tell you.

Well, there's no way you're going to get me to participate in that.

The sun just set on my wanting to pretend to go to the Serengeti for any of those reasons!

So, they have a new angle!  C'mon, this angle has been sold and sold and sold for centuries now.

It started with Napoleon Hill, who interviewed the successful and the rich, and, finding their common characteristics, organized them and put forth a guide for others to follow.  He called it, "Think and Grow Rich."

OK, so I read it and it helped a lot.  Well, a whole lot.  And it worked, at least for me.

Then there is the perennial "What Color Is Your Parachute?"  Like trying to figure out your strengths and weaknesses is going to help you find a job!?

Coming out of college after studying economics a young man simply couldn't go anywhere without an MBA.  So I went to MBA school!  And then I got a great job.  And discovered something I didn't previously know.  I HATED working in an office!  I hated the confinement, the stultified thinking, the politics and the whining.  I needed something else to do!  And I found that book.  Yeah, like a book is going to help me!?

OK, so I read it and it helped a lot.  Well, a whole lot.  And it worked, at least for me.

There have been many other books along the way.  From some I got a lot of ideas, from others only one or two.  I even learned how to dress successfully, and what colors work best for me (I am a summer...).  So I keep reading these books, and reading them has helped a bit, I guess, somewhat.

OK, so I read them and they have helped and do help a lot.  Well, a whole lot.  And the ideas have worked, at least for me.

Well sure, so here we have another one!  And this one shamelessly trying to get itself out to the broadest segment of the population possible.  And here I am again, looking to get shelved into some pigeon hole on the wall of personality types, and act accordingly.

And they want me to read a couple of chapters and post "my thinking" on the subject matter.  And then take some cute quiz to see where I fit in.  Well, there's no way you're going to get me to participate in that!

Like sure, I knew I am enterprising, creative and indefatigable.  And I don't like "THE BOX!"  I like to think I am outside that sucker, not confined.  For sure I am confident enough to feel comfortable out there.

I do prefer to be alone, not brought down by lobsters around me trying to pull me back into the bucket (or the cubicle) when I want to venture out and try something differently!  That's the kind of thinking that got me to develop a computer program to do home inspections TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO, long before anyone else out there was doing it.  Or even spending big bucks on a new home inspection technology (thermal imaging) a full SEVEN YEARS AGO, before anyone was capitalizing on the thought and offering classes in how to use the thing!

OK, so I was enterprising and ahead of the loop.

Did I consider all the risks?  NO!  Well, a little maybe, especially when I was yelled at by my partnering executive director (no croc for sure) for spending so much money on "another stupid toy!"  (My IR camera is NOT a toy I tell you!  It is a tool!)

But don't try to cram me into a pigeon hole!  I am not always like, oh, I don't know, a CROCODILE!  Sometimes I am a rhino.  Sometimes I am an eagle.  Sometimes I am a python.  Sometimes I am a leopard.  Hey, sometimes I am a complete pig!  I didn't see any of those characteristics even offered as options in the wall of pigeon holes to cram me into!  How fair is that?

Sure, along the way, a couple of slower-thinking, herding-mentality gnus have gotten into my way and I have had to pick one or two out of my teeth.  Did I bother to communicate well before I slammed into them?  Probably not as well as I could have.  Should I have had to?

For sure I consider myself to be the top of the food chain!  What, me worry?  Risks?  Communication?  Get real...  I WANT TO COME OUT ON TOP!  I DON'T WANT TO SURVIVE!  I WANT TO OVERCOME!

So let me just close out this rant by saying there's no way you're going to get me to participate in this shameless marketing ploy for points.  FOR GET IT !!

The Serengeti?  Sheesh.  Give me a big, fat break!

Don'tcha know it's a jungle out there?!

Jay,

Haven't met a typology quiz yet that didn't have a few gray areas. Still, I knew you'd be a croc - me too. :)

You make me laugh!  And as for the MBA, didn't anyone ever tell you what that stands for?  As a member of the secret MBA club, I can let you in on the secret...it stands for "Mediocre But Arrogant"

Congratulations clever croc. You may be way too smart for it, but you've snagged me by my long trumpeting snoot and dragged me right into the middle of it!  Now I'm off to read about the Serengeti.

Of course Steve.  Nobody fits into a single pigeon hole, no matter what the "book" says!  Well, I'm a croc, but I would expect all self employed, driven, entrepreneurial types to be.

Wow, Kathryn - then I won't tell you what my PhD means!  I wouldn't let my kids watch the Simpsons because the little boy Bart wore T-shirts that proclaimed his affinity for the mediocre!

Thanks Virginia.  They will never suck me in!  Good to hear you won't get dragged in either...

Mr Jay,

I have no taken the test and I was actually told that I was a fruit, not an animal. They said that I am a peach of a squirrel. Perhaps if you start as an animal, they prefer to make you something else.

Jay....love your sense of humor; the style of your writing & the subtle way you poke fun at all things points;
Now, to the truth, this is the only time I entered [correct word?] an AR contest; usually am too late to the party so-to-speak. DID read the chapters, found them interesting, will more than likely purchase the book to see how the principles will play out in my life.  Took the quiz; discovered I am a Giraffe--interesting, wanted to be a Zebra. Since Zebras run with the Wildebeest that is the animal I wanted to be; but alas, a question or two answered did not point me in that direction.
Don't expect to 'win', so don't expect any points; to make matters worse, don't think that the "link" I placed as per request [guidelines] was done correctly.  It looked way different from others that I saw.
What this did do--besides promoting a book for REALTORS, et al--was engage so many in the Rain.  Love the give & take; the back & forth; the ability to totally disagree & to so do without name calling or sign-carrying.

You always present interesting thoughts.  Hey, just noticed that your answer above was posted at 5:31 a.m.;
couldn't even focus on the screen at that hour of the day anymore; that probably means that I would never actually BE any animal on the Serengeti or anywhere else. They are up with the sun & down with the same.

Mr Jay,

I done followed your links in this post and I have discovered that you are also a weasel. You have done entered this contest while pretending to be mad at this contest attempt. I am very glad to be a sloth or sleuth or whatever. The boss and I might right on this one too. It was not an accident that you fooled me a month ago regarding that airplane trip.

Glad you enjoyed it Barb!  I am usually up at 3am, so posting at 530 is pretty common!

Sometimes I sleep in until 4 or so...

Nutsy - apparently she's very hard to get along with, maybe something like Ma Kettle.

Nutsy - weasel not!  This is called "out of the box" thinking.  It is an advanced form of thinking, which few undertake to do, so it is not surprising that you didn't recognize it.  But it's very clever.

Fooled you?  Hey, man squirrel, we brought you home!

Hi Jay.  I truly enjoy your style of writing and consistent willingness to take on what seem to be some sacred cows.

I confess that, as still a newbie in search of new friends, contacts, relationships and yes, points, I did succumb to the challenge.  It was pretty apparent this was truly a gigantic marketing ploy and the further I looked into the various associated websites the more obvious it became.  In fact it almost seems as though the marketing hype strategy was fully developed first then someone on the team was assigned to cast about for a suitable author to write a book that fit neatly within the plan.

Despite falling prey to the points lure, I at least didn't fall totally into the love feast.  I found the first two chapters decidely thin in terms of content and characterization and as I said in my post, it was most assuredly not Hemingwayesque.  Of course it wasn't meant to be.  The book is merely an intriguing scaffold built to support some commonsense points about what it takes to be successful in business & life.

Keep on the attack Jay!  Lifting the blinders is heavy work.  Go for it!

I was being playful here Vance.  Of course this is a marketing ploy!  Every contest on AR is trying to get people aware of something.  In this case, an author is trying to get a book out to as many people as possible and AR gave him a venue!

I had some fun with this one Suzanne.  All marketing is to sway.  There are 20 peaks in North America higher than Pike's Peak.  How many can you name?  THAT'S marketing!
