The nettle caterpillar makes it's home in Maui

Just this week it was discovered that a caterpillar, native to South East Asia has made it's way to Haiku on the Valley Isle.  This caterpillar is unusual looking with spines and a dark stripe running the length of it's back.  It is unfortunate that this pest has made it's way to our beautiful island for a couple reasons.

  1.  A large infestation can cause serious damage to the plants it feeds on. Our Hawaiian ti and palm trees are 2 items it eats, it is also eating the guinea grass that is growing in all the pastures and gulches on Maui.  With such a large supply of food, these caterpillars can spread easily.
  2. There is concern that this will affect our agricultural crops here on Maui.
  3. The nettle caterpillar (Darna Pallivittta) has a painful sting.  When one of its bristle like spines touches the skin it is similar to a Portuguese man-of-war sting.

It is believed that these pests have hitch hiked on plants being shipped from the Big Island to landscape Maui developments. Hopefully, with the communities efforts, we can get rid of this new invasive species.

Haiku is a close knit community on the north shore of Maui, it is a beautiful unspoiled area with tropical vegetation and can have fairly heavy rainfall.

Karen - Interesting. Michigan also has a big problem with Invasive Species coming in on ships and freighters. Gary Smith has written several articles. Our mass transport systems transport much more than freight. What type of intervention is planned?

The whole issue of invasive species coming in on ships and freighters is a HUGE controversy here right now.  You may have seen my blog on the Hawaii superferry...  Long story short, a corporation decided the Hawaiian Islands was ready for a ferry system to move people and their cars from island to island.  The state dept of transportation exempted them from having to do an environmental impact study.  About 6 wks ago the ferry arrived and the supreme court stopped them and basically said "of course you need to do an EIS. Now they are in court trying to start service while they are doing the study.  My opinion is this would be a big mistake, because by the time the study is done, we will have invasive species all over the islands.  this ferry will allow vehicles to drive all over one island, get on it and drive right off on another island, with seeds, and eggs and larvae possibly embedded in its wheel wells or under carriage etc...

The issue with the caterpillar is small compared to this.  They are spraying the area that they are known to be, and asking us to keep our eyes open for other infestations.
