It's that time of year again, at least here in Northeast Florida: new property owners who owned AND lived in their home on 1/1/11 may file for homestead exemption and portability by 3/1/11. In order to file you must be a permament Florida resident. Homestead exemption can provide up to $50,000 off the assess value of your home lowering property taxes. Property owners with a previous Florida homestead exemption who moved into a new home may also be elgibile for portability (the transfer of the savings from the Save Our Homes cap on a prior home to a new home). Filers who miss the deadline may apply later for homestead exemption until early September, but mys provide documentation for the later filing.
