Is Big Brother Watching You?

Well, I am pretty sure my big brother is not watching my blog; even my kids only check it out once in a while (and then get annoyed because we painted the hearth while they were away at college and they didn't get a say in the matter).  But you can be pretty sure your office manager or the president of your real estate firm is checking it out once in a while!

However, with Google Alerts, you can be surSimplyConnecticutRealEstate.come that others are keeping an eye on what you are saying!  When I got the opportunity to meet Alan Dalton when my company invited him and two other RisMedia people to come talk to us, I wrote a blog post about it.  RisMedia found it and mentioned my blog in their online newsletter.

When I was working on writing a post in ActiveRain while updating a Realtor.com listing, suddenly the entire look of the Realtor.com listing changed.  I posted about it--I wasn't too happy.  Realtor.com called me the next day to let me know that my area of the country was part of a test, and that it was not supposed to be permanent.  They also asked me for feedback on the new look.  I was more than happy to tell them what I didn't like and what I did.  I was impressed that they would call.  I would be even more impressed if they changed things back to the way they were.

When I posted about Birding Books, PetersonGuides.com wrote a comment on the post telling me about new aps for the i-Phone and i-Pad for birders.  Too bad the "contact us" link on their website doesn't seem to work, because I tried to write to them asking for permission to use a screen shot of their website in my blog, but when I hit "send" on my question, it just kept saying "please wait." I tried it again the next day, and the same thing happened--not good.

So fellow bloggers, I am just giving you a hint that you never know who might be watching, aside from you clients, your competition, your friends, and other ActiveRainers!

Chris, I have definitely found that to be the case when you get a call or an email much later on about some past post you wrote. It is amazing. Someone out there really is reading this stuff.

Hi Chris - That's great!  I hope that it was a productive conversation!

Hi Gary - When you take a look at your statistics and see how many people are clicking on your posts versus how many are actually commenting, you know that there are lots of "silent" people watching.  : )

I think this is a great post and great reminder of the power of what we are doing. I agree with most comments above that the good outweighs the bad because as long as you aren't writing something that you regret getting it out there is the point. I have certainly great examples of companies and people reblogging posts and giving feedback to me that says keep it up.

It's a good thing we can recend some of these blogs.  Right?  Or maybe the "members only" should be used when in doubt.  We are not the enemy, we are the friends.

Hi Aaron - Yes, but sometimes Newbies believe they are writing into the wind.  I hope this post gives them encouragement!  : )

Hi Damon - Thanks!  This is a powerful forum and it gets great Google juice!  I posted a property yesterday, and it was found by Google within seconds.  Now that is powerful!

Hi Shirley - I have written entire posts about the use of Members Only and how important it can be.  I am often surprised to see that people are writing about a client they worked with that day and making it public.  Even if it is a nice post, you don't want people thinking "hey, if I work with this guy, am I going to be his blog fodder?"

Good morning, Chris. Thanks for the heads-up. I suspect that Google Alerts does make it much easier for “Big Brother” to keep an eye on us.

Hi Bill - On the flip side, Google Alerts makes it much easier for us to keep an eye on ourselves, too--at least what is showing up online about us!

Wow... kind of cool and scary at the same time that so many people can follow what you do online. I guess that's why you can never be too careful what you post on the internet.  It is permanent and anyone can find it.

Hi Tricia - It shouldn't be scary if you just think before you post (and this goes for everywhere--especially Facebook!).  : )

That is the beauty of google alerts, I have way to many setup, and if my small company does I know if I write about a big corporation they are bound to notice.

We also love Google Alerts, but we sometimes wonder if we have too many set up.  :)
