Adventures to the top!

Most summers my family can be found in Sicily. We enjoy the food, family, friends, traditions and cultures; but, one our favorite things is our sense of adventure and exploring new places.

Here are some photos of our trip to the top of Mt Etna; still a very active volcano near the favorite tourist spot of Taormina, Sicily.

As you drive on the thruway, the smoking mountain appears in the distance.

Going through the town evidence of its past eruptions are evident. Many of the roads and a lot of buildings are made from lava rock, having a dark grey shadow loom around.

The closer you get to the top, you can find homes partially buried by lava, and less life forms.

At the tourist spot near the top it is cold and grey, almost looking like being on Mars, but the views are breathless.

Hikers can go further up almost to the opening, only my daughter and I attempted this till we got too cold and had to turn back.

We took a sky ride and were shocked to see green life forms in the barren land below.

Hope you enjoyed the adventure to the top with me!

Oh, and another time I’ll need to tell the story how we lost our car breaks when coming down this mountain. Needless to say, we survived!

Ann, we went to the top of this volcano 2 times, unfortunately each time it was more than an adventure, once our camera was stolen, and the second time we almost lost our life without breaks. But the trip was surely worth it and so are the memories!

Ellen - what a wonderful adventure!  Your two "incidents" on the way to the top are unfortunate but how many of your kids' friends can share those kinds of stories?

Nice Ellen...love Italy but haven't made it to Sicily...how wonderful all of you go back every year with the kids to see their heritage and know there is something outside of home worth exploring.

Tammy, this is a place we never forget...when we hear in the Italian news it has erupted we have that special connection, and our prayers go out.

John, there is a lot to see, perhaps I'll post more.

Josh, do go...it will be special!

Roger, Even our summer home is in the moutons, and we have seen special things there, ike our heads in the couds!

Debbie, I have other special locations we've been to...remember my husband was born ther, so we don't always go the travelers route.

Ginny, The other family in the photo, is my husbands best friend, his wife is like a sitter to me. We live ther like the natives and not like a tourist, and thats the best part!

Valerie, My son cried the whole time, he thought we would die, that was nothing compared to the car ride home without breaks! LOL

Susan, imagine how we feel when finding out that after we visited this volcano that it has erupted again. It is a very active one but fortunately not to the degree of previous distraction, however I'd never live in a town that is near one!

Ciao Ellen! I haven't made it to Sicilia yet...il mio Nono was born there. Un giorno...devo andare!!! Sounds like quite an adventure! I want to hear your car story. I have a car story from Sardinia when my husband and I were visiting his family there before we got engaged!

Valerie, I do hope you go, Sicily is different from other parts of Italy.

MY Car Story, First off, my husband always likes having the BEST cars. We had an sporty Alfa Romeo that most of the locals admired. We kept it in Italy and had it serviced every year before we came. But this year things were not normal.

As we were coming down the mountain of Mt Etna, there were twists and turns in the road, suddenly, my husband remarked, "I have no breaks!" We went dead silent listening to the sound of his foot pumping the breaks to try to control the car. When we finally got to the bottom we stopped at a gar station. We had friends with us in a separate car, they said I looked like a ghost when they saw me. Would you believe they took a plastic bag, a grocery bag, (those cost a nickel there), and tied it somewhere under the hood and said we were good to go. We made it home fine.

After we got back my husband had the problem fixed and that was fine until a week later when going down another curvy road, we lost our power steering. My hair really turned grey after that and I refused to go out. So we sold the car after that, and got a rental!

What an adventure! I would be too scared to go look at it!

I want to go to Yellow Stone Park but I saw a documentary where it said that the top of the of volcano is very large and actually many miles in diameter .... i forgot how many miles but what ever it was it was way too much for this chicken little!

So if you go see that geyser...well you have been traveling for miles with in the volcano! Not me!
