Mandatory continuing education (CE) requirements for New Jersey real estate agents have been announced by the New Jersey Real Estate Commission.  Beginning with our 2011 licensing schedule, 12 hours of continuing education will be required during every two year relicensing cycle.

seal of the state of NJNJ Association of REALTORS® is reviewing this rule proposal and will submit comments to the Real Estate Commission during the 60-day public comment period. The NJ Real Estate Commission's proposed Continuing Education regulations are also available for your review and comment.

The rule proposal states that 12 hours of CE will have to be completed as a condition of relicense beginning with the 2013 cycle.  The proposal also contains information about the courses and instructors to be approved for CE credit. No CE will be required to relicense in the 2011 cycle beginning on July 1, 2011.  It's after that date (and for the 2013 cycle), that CE courses be available and required to relicense for real estate agents in New Jersey.

studying (sxc-Ole Jørgen Bratland & Gisele Jaquenod) A minimum of half the required 12 hours of CE must be from courses on; agency, disclosure, legal issues (contracts), ethics, fair housing, broker/salesperson rules, environmental laws, escrow and record keeping.  The remaining CE credits can be in these core areas or through elective courses.

After the public comment period, the Real Estate Commission will review the submitted comments and then have to formally adopt the rule proposal. In addition, these proposal rules do not contain information regarding the new licensing category for referral agents. Those rules will be released at a later date by the Real Estate Commission.

The law requiring continuing education for NJ's real estate licensees was signed into law in 2010.

Ours is only 12 hours every two years, and the NAR required ethics counts toward the NJ CE!!  Not enough I say!

We have a four-year cycle here, with 45 hours required every four years. Personally I think an annual requirement would be better.

Jim I'd agree.  I make it a point to do CE every year.  I have a problem, with NAR and CE (the fees and no updated training)...OK I feel a blog coming on!
