When I was a broadcast news director in the Bangor Maine market, you saw the savvy media types release to the AP, UPI wire services a story to designed to hit the airwaves on a Friday if possible.
Governor's had their weekly new conference providing enough time to cut up the video, audio, wrap around it with some copy gleaned from that session. Smart.
The reason for the longer mileage on the news, articles, broadcast stories? People have lives beyond the TV camera, the bright lights, RE 50 radio studio audio mics. In Maine, good luck finding a news person at the helm Saturday and Sunday. Other than a rip and read of the wire, something packaged the end of the week and heated up. Put in to the broadcast fridge for very limited broadcasts to get through that weekend. Most of it is economics, not just being at home with family Waltonese. Only so many news watchers in an area of Maine where there are eleven people per square mile.
Broadcasting to Maine trees, wildlife does not pay for the juice to keep the electrons flowing, radiating.
Out that big antennae standing vigilant with red, white paint, blinking red or white lights behind the studio "A" and "B".
Or the news microwaved to a mountain top stick nearby for even better propagation, saturation, reach.
And newsprint, papers, magazines, firing up the presses on the drop of the hat can not be technically done.
It's called a big production flywheel.And needing lots of readership to create extra, special additions. There are time limitations and why you go to bed watching a west coast summer Red Sox game without the final score in extended innings.
Wake up still not sure how that game turned out for some time.
Too late for the presses that head to bed too.

With no local experience, history or perspective for this jounalist on his way up the media market ladder to draw from a local turf childhood. They do things different on the other side of the country. This is Maine, not Hollywood.
Now joomla, wordpress platform blog posts from passionate, aspiring writers with high powered still and video cameras are setting up roof top broadcast facilities. Tapping in to the wire, hitting the Internet backboard to ride the waves. For surfers all over the Global Village like Marshall McLuhan predicted. To gather the news from the local trenches, the guy and gal on the street.
Raw, not so polished but honest and connecting on a real level with the audience in new powerful ways. Hopefully not spun by anyone appearing to be the girl next door naive and wholesome. Not talking to them, leaving a comment on the blog posts, putting thumbs up on their facebook page, uploading a response video on youtube like we can do now.
It's now two way, more from the people ground swell communication flowing back because we can, have a keyboard, video and still camera of our own.
Maine, a little bit blunt, out spoken but you always know where you stand with people here. Wake up, start your dream. Come for a day, stay a life time in Maine.
