Twitter 101

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with Bluegrass Homes & Farms Realty, Agent Know How

I still see a lot of confusion on Twitter. The comment I get the most often on Twitter is "I don't know how to use it." All I can do is tell you how I use Twitter, and what I see other people doing. This does not mean my way is right, just an option.

"I don't know how to talk to people on Twitter." First of all, you have to be Following someone in order to talk to them. I don't care if it's Donald Trump (@realDonaldTrump) or your best friend. (One of these days I know Donald Trump will respond to my ramblings about The Apprentice.)

To follow someone find out what their user name is. It will have the "@" sign in front of it. Mine's @brendadollteam. So, you type in @brendadollteam and then say what you have to say in less than 140 characters.

"How do I know if someone has replied to me?" Every once in a while, go to the @Mentions tab:

Twitter mentions tab

If you would like to respond back, just hit Reply and be sure to type in their user name first.

"What are hashtags all about?" A hashtag looks like this: #.  For instance, follow the hashtag #rawre and you will get all the tweets about Real Estate and Women. (Follow this on Tuesday nights, and you'll get Twitter on steroids.) How do you follow these tweets? Go to the Search bar at the top and type in the whole hashtag #rawre. It will ask if you want to save this search, and sometimes that is a good idea so you won't have to keep retyping it.

Some people use hashtags for different reasons, like #justsayin. It's never intended to be a particular group or a subject of interest; yet, I bet if you did a search term on that you could find some really interesting stuff!

"How and what should I re-tweet?" If you think someone's tweet is particularly amusing, informative, or inspiring, by all means, go ahead and re-tweet it! I love quotes and re-tweet a lot of those.

I know the politically correct way to re-tweet someone's post is to say RT @username, then copy and paste the post after that and tweet it as you normally would. Not me, I'm lazy. I just hit the re-tweet button. Copying doesn't work well for me, so sue me for doing it the way Twitter intended. ;)

♦ Don't worry about who is following you at first. Just get used to being in there and getting to know some people. Don't follow everyone who follows you, either, or you'll quickly get overwhelmed. Look at each follower to see if their posts actually interest you, because that's what going to come up in your newsfeed! ♦

If you've been skittish about using Twitter I hope this helps! If you have any questions please feel free to leave them in the comments.

Thanks for the crash course. I am on Twitter, but still do not understand its value. Especially since I have and use Facebook!

I have friends that only send me messages through twitter. It can be a really useful communication tool. Thanks for the informative post.

Lynda:

I am still not sure what the point of twitter is.  I have an account, but have never used it or felt the urge to use it.  What am I missing?

KWR: Tweet about happenings in your neighborhood. Link to interesting events and your blog posts. Link to your website. Reply to other people's posts.

Barb and Peter: You're welcome!

Kristi: It's like apples and oranges to me. I like both.

Virginia: I learned how to type on a manual!

Lola: Yes, I think you get it! The learning curve is more than the other social media websites, which is why I felt the need for this post.

Joan: I feel another blog post coming on: Why Use Twitter? I'll enlist some help on this one and give credit where credit is due.

Heather: Again, it depends on who you follow. You can quit following people who say things that upset you. Most of the people I follow are positive and inspiring.

Sandy and Tammie: You're welcome, have fun!

Jamie: Thanks for the compliment, and I have followed you.

Kathy: I wish I had started years ago, but I wasn't ready.

Phil: Great suggestions, I have used that before and will expand on that in my next post.

Christine: Glad I could help!

Beth: I will definitely do another more advanced post!

Kaera: It will take you a while to understand it, but once you get used to it, it is just as much fun.

Eric: Does it drive a lot of traffic? Are you tracking it? That's something I need to get started.

Christopher and Brian: Thanks for the compliment!

Jeff: It's flattering to know that I can be a motivator.

Evelyn: Again, I will definitely create a post "Why Use Twitter?"

ACTIVE RAIN: THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR FEATURING MY POST!! MUCH APPRECIATED ♥

I haven't gotten into the Tweet thing yet. I don't know why, I think I just have too many things going on with 3 blogs and my Facebook page. I appreciated reading about this though just in case, ha.

Keeping up with those things is a lot of work, I know. Plus the Facebook groups and LinkedIn. I appreciate your comment, Shar..for some reason, I just now got the notice 4 days later. :/

Rick, I'm following over 400 people and there's no way I could keep up with every tweet. But I do pay attention to the @mentions. And tweet stuff I hope is helpful or interesting.

Eric, I know what you mean, I see a lot of great posts and think, my brain can't handle this right now. Then I go back when my mind is fresh, usually mornings.
