Why Socks and Luxury Homes Don't Mix ~

Ask yourself this... "What did my socks do to deserve this?"

Huntington Beach Short Sale Expert

Here in Huntington Beach, CA, Surf City USA, we are surrounded by high end luxury homes. And whether it's a new home or a complete remodel, floors are a big deal. While there are many types of flooring, one of the most common type to find in a high end home is travertine.

Travertine comes in many grades and types, but even if it's smoothed, filled, and polished, it will be still be joined to the next stone with a grout line. These lines and the grout that fills them can be very rough, causing instant sock sadness.

There are many other stones that can be used on a floor as well. Slate, limestone, granite, marble, sandstone, I've even see onyx (which I would NOT recommend, by the way). They also vary greatly by how they are "finished", and these finishes can go from being poished and smooth to being rigid and rough. But even on stones with a polished finish, eventually, your socks will be heartbroken... well, you know what I mean.

Ironically, one of the worst stone floors for your socks is slate, commonly found in mountain towns like Park City, UT and Aspen, CO. And here is where you need your socks the most!!! Go figure.

So if you want to save your socks the pain and anguish or slowly breaking down and eventually ending up in some land fill, the solution is simply... Carpet!

So sad to hear about your socks. Guess you will have to carry an extra pair in your car just in case this happens again, LOL!!

We don't have that problem with luxury homes in Hawaii.  Slippahs (known as flipflops or thongs to those of you on the Mainland) come off at the door.  Socks are what we keep in a drawer for our athletic shoes...

In Hawaii, you have luau feet, so no huhu bout the socks or the floor, but in Huntington Beach, you might need the socks to keep your feet warm, so get the new improved double laminated house sock available from Rob Magnotta for fashion, comfort and durability. A Hui Hou.

I had no idea! We don't have as many homes with these types of flooring in Flagstaff, so I haven't had any socks perish to such a fate but will now be aware! Thank you=)

what about good ol' fashioned wood!!!! Women seem to prefer it and it is resilient...I just recommend staying away from bamboo....for all of its merit it is not as strong as advertised!!!

Hi Kimo - I'll have to take your word for the "luau feet", but my new line of socks will be available soon at Target!

Sylvie - It's too warm in AZ for socks anyway, right?

Paddy - Nothing wrong with wood. But then again, there's nothing wrong with socks!!!

Rob--

That explains why I'm going through so many pairs of socks since I moved into this house... I never made the connection!  I have a lot of slate, but unlike many of the comments here, I LOVE my carpet.... warm, soft, recycled content--some of the softest carpet I've ever had!  And as for wearing the socks on the slate, I certainly prefer barefoot and the feel of the stone under my feet, but here in Tahoe in the winter.... guess I'll give in to slippers.....

I keep picturing a husband, wife, agent, and six kids pulling in to see  a luxury home, and all walking up to the front door carrying slippers or flip flops. Agent: did everyone bring their flip flops, slippers, or spare pair of socks? Kids: Do we have to change outside on the porch? It's cold and rainy! Agent: Yes

Maybe those disposable galoshes will come in handy.

Have you ever looked at carper under a microscope?  You may think it is clean, but it is disgusting.  Wood, stone or tile floors is the way to go.  You may need to invest in slippers!

Hi Rob,

I have travertine on most of my 1st floor -floors and I love it though it is cold.  I only go without slippers in the summer and then it feels great on my bear feet.

Just got back from California from the KW family Reunion. It was so cold I wore two pairs of socks on the carpet.

I am a fan of hard wood and tile. Many people have pets and if kept up after the tile and hard wood remain cleaner and odor free. Carpet soils so easily and requires more maintenance. I just restained and poly'd my wood floors after 13 years of hard wear by a family and three large dogs, the previous owners had dogs and kids and lived here roughly ten years. I have never seen carpet last that long and look or smell good. The wood and tile are sock friendly which is more than I can say for the sock monster in my dryer!

Hey Karen - Maybe I saw you at RainStorm? Did you go? It was a blast!

NO NAME - Sorry, not a fan of Uggs. Socks go inside shoes, and I wear shoes to work... even if I'm showing property on the sand.
