A few days ago in the local news (Orlando) they were telling about a girl, who came from school, saw a man nearby, went home, turned on the alarm (smart girl), and then the guy tried to make his way in. The alarm went off when he opened the back door, and he ran away into the wooded area.
The girl did not really see the guy very well, and the hostess read the description:
A man,
Medium built,
About 40 y.o.
The host thought for a moment, and then absolutely seriously said “well, I think this is a good description” and then turned to camera with a usual “If you see someone fitting the description….”
What description? What was “good” about this description? If this is where our PC is taking us, then we really don’t have great chances to ever catch the perpetrator. What was the problem to specify the race? It is not about racism (and I do not have a clue about the color of the guy), it is about narrowing the search.
What if we would become even more sensitive and tomorrow would feel like a good description does not need age (criminals, who are older, may take offense), so what a ”good“ description would sound like? And shouldn’t we really be more sensitive about sex?
“Folks, if you see a human, who can be exhibiting anti-social traits, please call 911”
* I did not take a note and wrote the exact description, so do not hold me to it. I simply was struck by obvious PC of the situation, and a phenomenal lack of any helpful information for people to look for.
