Fresh Brown Eggs

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with North Sky Realty LLC 6502410580

I came across this sign while looking at a house for a client.  The homeowners have seven acres close just a little North of downtown Battle Creek, and they of course have a hen house where they sell eggs.  I unfortunately did not have time to inquire if I could buy some eggs when I visited, as I was pressed for time.

However, my wife has her connections locally with another chicken farmer and we have fresh eggs all the time.  There is a distinctive difference between the fresh organic eggs from a local farm, and the processed ones you buy in the store.  So for all those that have enjoyed fresh eggs from a local farm, this picture if for you!

I get fresh farm eggs (cage free) and the yellow color of the yokes are one sign that the eggs aren't from a production "farm".

My mom swears she can taste the difference between brown and white eggs!  Perhaps my palette is not that refined . . .

Why are the farm eggs brown and not white.  Can't fresh ones be white too?

Michael, there's an agent in my office who has chickens and he brings them in for us. $2.00 a dozen, can't beat the price, and i don't have to drive anywhere to get them.  And yes, you really can taste the difference.

Michael,

Great post on Localism. When I moved out of Chicago and to the country in Northern, IL, I always took my kids to the farm to buy brown eggs. They always loved the experience and begged me to make omelets. They spread the word to their friends and my kitchen looked like the country store. Those were the days!

Thanks for triggering a pleasant memory.

There is definitely a difference in the color of the yoke, and the farm fresh eggs do taste a lot better.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

I love having fresh eggs right from the chickens.  We usually have our own hens, but suffered a setback lately when a neighbor's dog killed them all just as they were starting to produce!  GRRRRRR
