Why does the Small Business Administration work AGAINST women?

I don't know if any of you have ever incorporated and wanted tosba, wosb, be noticed as a women owned small business (WOSB).  There seems to be many touted benefits including 'going to the head of the line' status with many government agencies.  I've always thought that it would be a great idea to get this status but there's a problem.

What's the problem?  Add a fee for 'membership' and the privilege of being a woman and then get socked with a yearly 'subscription' fee after that.  So let's see if I have this correctly?  I have all the documentation legally available to certify that my business is indeed owned by a women and I have to PAY for the privilege?

I can't find anywhere else on the planet that this happens to men.  This is not a 'club' of any sort other than the government wants to see how many actual women own small businesses.  I've never heard of any man having to do this and it's just discriminatory. I'm not sure why some states attorney's office (run by a women) hasn't taken these buffoons to task on this in the past.

So if I pay a 'processing fee' of $395 and then continue on with my 'membership' of $195 to $295 for updates needed I can have that status.  Hmmmm?

But I do have that status and I have it for free!  No need for a TSA body scan or pat down - I freely admit it.  Besides every time that I use the 'ladies room' I am again validated.

I just don't think that I EVER should have to pay for it.  And because I don't feel I should pay for this status am I 'gender neutral?'

What have other women in business done?

I'm afraid I've never heard of this but if faced with the option myself, I think I would opt out of this designation.

Brenda:  When fill out applications for REO agents for Fannie & Freddie they ask you this question. I'm not going to pay $400 per year for this priviledge each year.

David:  I loved Pat. Julia Sweeney lives in Chicago BTW now & I was going to do a post on her in her new house on the North Shore.

Hmmm . . . why should there be a payment fee for that status?  The government requires it for the WOSB . . . SBA gets a ton of money running their program.  What??  They don't get ENOUGH money subsidized by Uncle Sam.  There is a reason why there is this designation required.  I had no idea there was such a substantial fee to obtain this status . . . again, which is required.  GEEZ!!  Nice irony Lyn.

Actually, it's unbelieveable.  If you feel like taking on a cause, this would be a good one.

I received a contact from the SBA -

From: Mike Stamler
Subject: SBA and fees for Women-owned Small Business (Sent via Activerain)

As several of your commenters pointed out, it IS unbelievable. Because it's not true. Follow the link you posted to fees. It takes you to an article posted by a member of a group called WinDS (I don't know who they are, but they're not the SBA). WinDS charges women to help them with the SBA paperwork. SBA doesn't charge anyone anything for this, and SBA staff, and SMall Business Development Center staff can help women with the paperwork. No SBA fee. Not no way, not no how.

I will be investigating this for all of us shortly.  I thank Mike from the SBA for contacting me.

That is unbelievable.  I can't believe there is a FEE to be known as a Woman Owned Small Business.
