Many people looking to buy a home find themselves pondering the question, “Does a single family home or a condo suit me/us better?” Owning a condo is perfect for you if you have a busy lifestyle, travel a lot and/or have little or no interest in landscaping or home maintenance.
Consider these pros and cons when deciding between a condo and a single-family home:
Condo:
· Typically less expensive than a single family home.
· You own the space within the walls.
· Fewer maintenance requirements.
· The building exterior, landscaping, surrounding roads and driveways, and common areas are typically all owned by the condo association, a group made up of all unit owners.
· Better security with neighbors close by.
· Assessments by the condo association for painting or repairs can be a substantial added expense.
Single family home:
· You own the interior as well as the exterior (i.e. the walls themselves as well as the space between)
· Usually offers more storage space.
· You have plenty of space to garden and grow plants, flowers, trees, fruits, vegetables, etc.
· You are responsible for all maintenance, landscaping and repairs.
· You usually don’t have to pay community dues or special assessments.
· You're usually not physically attached to your neighbors.
Condos are an excellent first home choice and a smart choice if you're downsizing from a larger house. Ask yourself these questions: How will your household change over the next few years? Will you still need a larger home or will a condo afford you enough space? Would you be happier in a smaller house with room for a garden?
Consider your lifestyle and any changes you expect in the next few years before you make a final decision:)
