As a former librarian, I have seen the importance of reading in both of my children. I took them to the library every week and we would always bring home bags of books for my husband and I to read to them later on. Now, my 18-year old son is an avid reader of non-fictional books about music, astronomy and cars. My 21-year old daughter loves her fictional books on mysteries or psychological thrillers. I particularly love reading alll non-fiction books regarding just about anything. My husband enjoys reading both fiction and non-fiction, specifically on genealogy and war.
Tomorrow, March 2nd is "Read Across America" day, where schools across the country bring in celebrity readers to read various stories to students. Reading is essential to a child's cognitive development.
Here are some other benefits:
1. Better vocabulary.
2. Excellent comprehensive skills.
3. May help students score higher on their college exam.
4. Promotes a closer bond between parent and child.
5. May increase your childs' lifetime earnings to more than $50,000.
Bottom line, there are no negative benefits on reading. JUST DO IT!
