Taking a few simple steps as the spring thaw begins could save you a great deal of stress AND $money$. Here in Minnesota, we are expecting record flooding this spring. So more importantly than most years there are just a few simple things you should do to help keep water out of your basement.
1) Make sure that you sump pump is plugged in and operating properly
2) Make sure that the hose for the sump pump discharges the water well away from the house. (At least 10 feet and to a point where the grade is sloped away from the foundation.)
3) As the snow clears adequately, make sure the gutter downspout extensions are in place and again, carrying the water well away from the house.
Finally, be sure to check on each of these daily during the main thaw. Situations during the spring can change very rapidly as the frost come out of the ground. Your sump pit could be completely dry in the morning and by that evening it could be overflowing.
What do I do if my sump pump fails? IF you have to ask Call a plumber!
Paying attention, taking preventative measures and catching a problem early can save hundreds even thousands of dollars in water damage.
