Hiring a professional carpet cleaning company is most of the time the best option when dealing with hard-to-get-out stains or rug repair. Especially Oriental rugs should not be repaired or cleaned by the owners because their fragile knots or thread and coloring can be ruined easily.
To get started compile a list of nearby carpet cleaning companies by looking through the phone book or online. This list should be weeded out by asking questions and doing some additional research. Here are some tips:
1. Ask the prospective carpet cleaning company's representative whether the company has an Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification. The IICRC is a nonprofit formed to monitor and set standards in the cleaning and restoration industries. Being certified by this nonprofit shows that the company is both professional and knowledgeable about cleaning carpets.
2. Find out if the work is subcontracted to another company or if the employees who come to do the job are from the carpet cleaning company you hired. Large companies will often subcontract work to smaller ones when they get really busy. It is important that the company sends out it's own employees rather than those of another one that may not have qualified personnel.
3. Make sure the company carries sufficient insurance. Companies must have insurance for their employees or you will be liable for any injuries that occur at your home. Ask also the company to produce an "Insurance Certificate" that verifies that the company carries liability insurance.
4. Ask for a list of referrals from previous clients who can attest to the company's work ethic and cleaning performance. Most companies will have written testimonies of past clients showcased in their store fronts or web sites. However, it is wise to confirm these statements with past clients prior to hiring the company.
5. Examine the carpet you want cleaned and/or repaired. Take note of the type, location, and size of stains and/or damages found on it. Ask the carpet company how it would handle cleaning these types of stains and repair. Ask the company to come out to give you an estimate. Get several estimates, comparing apples to apples, before making your decision.
