I hear, over and over, people saying that the state of our country's economy, morals and ethics are 'not their problem'. I could not disagree more.
The United States is the finest country the world has ever seen, and has saved the lives, literally, of more people than we can count. My dad, and both his brothers, went into World War II to preserve the freedoms we have today. The least we can do is take the responsibility of leaving a great country to those who follow us. I went on with my education and career and never served in the military. That bothered me more and more as I aged. I attempted to enlist during the Gulf War, but was two years to old. I was not to be deterred, however, so I went into law enforcement as a deputy sheriff. I could serve my community and country, and I even worked at my other career in my off time. Then, 911 occured. I had already given the years required of me, but i told my wife I could not live with myself if I left the force when the country was in such peril. So, I stayed another five years. It was dangerous and life threatening every time I put on the uniform, but it was incredibly satisfying.
I am not saying anyone else needs to do this, but think about what you can do. Volunteer, work at a charity, help a disabled or elderly person, or just pick up litter. Think about mentoring a child. That has a huge impact for the future. Remember what the Nike saying is. "Just do it".
