Comparing By Referral Only vs Buffini & Company

By
Real Estate Agent with HomeSmart Real Estate

I recently attended a 3 hour "referral workshop" event put on by Joe Niego for Buffini and Company.  Joe is a dynamic speaker and he discussed the merits of doing business through systematic referrals.  A minimal number of systems and/or techniques were shared.  One shared system was to mail an item of value every month.  You can purchase a glossy newsletter from Buffini and Company for $99 for 100 flyers.  Buffini and Company also offer a 2 day "Turning Point Retreat" to get more information for a "discounted" price of $295.  Also offered was  a class by a "certified Trainer", 100 day foundation class...I probably have the name wrong.

About 1.5 years ago, I attend a 3 hour "referral workshop" put on by Joe Stumpf's By Referral Only company.  It also discussed the benefits of a systemized referral system.  In this 3 hour event, more systems and techniques were shared.  By Referral Only offers a 3 days "Main Event" to learn more about its before, during and after units of a referral business.  I believe the "discounted" price was $795...however By Referral Only does offer a no questions asked money back guaranteed if you don't think you'll grow your business by an extra $60K after 90 days.

The main event is attended by first timers and repeat students.  The 3 days training not only goes through different principles, but actual systems to implement and follow.  However, they do have systems described that one can follow, you can't purchase the materials, like you can for the Buffini monthly newsletter.  At the Main event, membership to the By Referral Only Community is pitched.  I don't recall the exact amount of membership, but I believe it was about $4,000/year.

Does any one have experience in both of these systems and can share a better comparison of the two philosophies or systems?  Which system did you chose and why?

I don't have any personal experience with Buffini but am a member of By Referral Only.  The program is an investment with the first year being your most expensive at $499 monthly for 12 months. Once you're done there, it's $199 FOREVER...and EVER if you choose to give up your bi-weekly coaching calls. The best part is the systems are in place after the first year, you will always have access to a coach-just not a designated coach after the first year, and anything and everything new added to the By Referral Only smorgas board is yours too!  You're locked in - can attend as many Main Events (a $795 value each time you go) and thrive in a business that is slowing down with continued discipline and determination.

It's fabulous!!  I understand Brian used to work for/with Joe Stumpf years ago and branched off.  I'm sure what he offers is terrific but....why settle for Great when you can have AMAZING!!!  The bottom line is "It's all about YOU!"

Good luck in your decision!!

Thank you to all that have contributed their thoughts!
There have been lots of great information and viewpoints to consider.  I agree any system (or coaching) is only as good as the system that one can follow.
If anyone else has more information to share about By Referral Only or Buffini and Company, we welcome your inputs.

There are those who have no clue about referrals and how they work. Such systems can turn people around. However, there are far too many who don't go into these situations with a healthy degree of prudence and discernment.

I utilized Buffini's system for approx. 2 yrs.  I didn't think much of the coaching in comparison to other coaching programs I've been involved with (in particular, Mike Ferry's coaching program).  I like the Buffini concept of calls & notes.  I wasn't thrilled about doing pop-by's.

I've recently signed up with Stumpf's By Referral Only program.  It seems to be a more "rounded" program with ideas for generating buiness Before, During & After the transaction.

My business is currently approx. 80% from referrals so I'm looking for ways to increase my business & take it to the next level.

I definitely believe in having a business coach.

For those of you with experience with Buffini or Stumpf, which program/system do you think would be most helpful to someone who is brand new in the industry and would be starting from scratch with only a small database of 80-90 friends (no former clients)? Thanks.

By Referrl Only by far. I have been a member of both groups and what Joe Stumpf gives you in his blog mybyreferralonly.com is worth more then what you get from Buffini.

Go BRO...

By Referral Only (BRO). I did BRO Main Event when in my third year in business as I only had a small sphere and needed to grow my business by referrals by existing and past clients. I was doing $3M in volume in my third year which of course was nice, but I needed to take it to the next level. It cost $795 but it MORE than paid for itself. The following year I did $5M and by year 5 did over $10,000,000. Do the math. My ROI was off the charts. My favorite item was my Evidence of Success card/email. Instead of sending out canned "Just Sold" Just Listed" the EOS template instructs you to write a personal story about how you helped your client to achieve their goals by selling their home etc. This was so successful, I would have people call me and say "Wow, I got your card, that's so amazing that you helped them that way! Can you help me?" How many times do you get a call from stranger, neighbors clients from a bland JS JL card - I was getting calls because they realized I understood it was about them, not me.

I'm now a real estate business coach and mentor and recommend people absolutely do some kind of training program (I gather Keller Williams does, so does Exit so go with it if you are with them) - but it really depends on your approach and personality as to what best fits for you. Why do I like BRO?

What I got from it was you are free to tailor it to your own personality and approach, there is no canned approach. I looked at Buffini after learning that he actually started as part of the BRO company and split off on his own to create Buffini. I didn't like Buffini because it is more canned and ridged in my opinion, and banging/number crunching prospecting that is not tailored to your way of doing business and is too scripted. Most people I know hate prospecting so won't do it if they do not feel comfortable and Buffini just never made me feel comfortable or natural. I'm a big believer that you will work ON your business and ask for business if you do it with your approach and what works for you and your personality. I feel BRO allows that.

Which would I do first starting out, knowing what I know now after almost 9 years?

After 6 months of finding your feet and setting up your business, niche, getting to know your market, etc I would do either Floyd Wickman (very good at setting out the way to set your business up, the elements and defining your market,) and /or BRO because it's more practical, provides tons of marketing tools and it is cheap in terms of it doesn't cost anything to ask someone if they know someone. The cost of $5000 a year is ONLY if you decide to take on a personal coach. It is only $200 month if you don't take a personal coach, but you still have complete access to all the TON of tools, forums, blogs, Nuggets, success sharing AND able to call in on a monday and ask a coach or have a one on one with a coach I think 1 or 2 times a month - just not your personal coach. Absolutely worth it in my opinion. Also, the community of BRO members is very close and you can build a network referral base through the site and meetings. It's excellent. You can try if free too for a couple of weeks if you ask them nicely.

Good luck to all!

Hi Karen -

Thanks for responding with such details and giving "your evidence of success" :)  I agree with your  "what can you do for them" vs about me mentality.

I'm Buffini all the way.  At his recent "Turning Point" Retreat in Santa Clara he started off by saying, "A Recession is a Terrible Thing to Waste".  Loved it!   His program has helped me a great deal.

Dora and Vincent,

I have been in the Real Estate business 25 years and have attended both Joe's and Brian's Seminars. Both are similar and have great ideas. I have bought and use Zaby's Respond that integrates into MS Outlook as well. One that I really like is an outfit called send out cards where it scans your own handwriting or printing and allows you to write a card with your own hand font! And place your signature too.  This in conduction with a contact manager lets you send a series of cards from anywhere. The card can be your own or pick from thousands. If you want attached a gift. They print it and mail it. You never leave your computer. Cost under a dollar for a post card and under 1.50 for a card in an envelope. I would check it out. www.cardstogive.com. This is truly one of the best deals I have come across in Years.

I have not met Mr. Buffini but after meeting Mr.Stumph I truly believe this man cares about your success. I understand they both have a vested interest to your success and yes they charge for their services but as a realtor so do I! There is an accountability and a responsibility when you charge for your services and I believe byreferralonly has come up with a system that can be tailored for any type of realtor.

I have done them both and would do neither as I would become a CRS as there are classes there that mirror these and with your personal style added you can get started.

I have done two amazing, excellent training programs. one is Ninja Selling with Larry Kendall ( I took this both in fort Collins co. where his co. is- AND in my home town.)  It was incredible and if i actually worked the system the way it is designed I know it would blow my mind. I can say, without a doubt it was life changing when it comes to " mindset" . AND I am just now finishing Peak Producers with Buffini and Co. again, it is a great system...and APPLYING IT IS WHAT MATTERS.

You can take tidbits from these trainers, or you can adopt their systems in full. Just know self discipline is what matters, having even a simple plan can make a big difference. I exceeded my goal in 2014, and I plan on implementing a mix of the two in 2015!!!

I am subscribed to the Buffini now and I love it and I can see that it has made a difference in my business. I am also looking into by referral only now but the costs just seems to be so enormous I’m actually thinking about doing both, Buffini is very affordable. I watched some of the videos from referral only and I know that it has to be a great program, but I cannot afford the upfront fees. I’ve had to look online and that’s how I found this to figure out what it actually cost for a referral only it bothers me that they don’t want to tell you I guess they think they’re going to scare you away so they’re going to try and sell you first

Brian & Joe used to be partners. Brian broke away from Joe to start Providence Systems, later renamed Buffini & Company. Brian had his reasons for the split, I went with Brian's training and have been with him 21 years.
