THAT’S SO TRASHY!

don't mess with texas

I was out putting up for sale signs on some listings today and had two on the same street.  I work in a rural market in the Texas Hill Country and so I list and sell a lot of vacant land.  These were two vacant lots on the main roadway into a neighborhood.
As I drove along I noticed that there was A LOT of trash along the sides of this road...and I don’t mean a bottle here and a wrapper there, I mean like a whole lot of trash, very noticeable trash.  It really started bothering me for a couple of reasons...
ONE, I was a girl scout and my son is a boy scout and throwing trash out of the car is STRICTLY forbidden and I have never even been able to pretend to consider tossing refuse out the window of my car at any point in my life, my conscience simply won’t permit it!
TWO, I live in Texas and when they say “Don’t Mess with Texas” they mean it, that is an anti-litter campaign that has been in place for years.  In fact you can actually “Adopt a Highway” and your family, church, school or civic organization can adopt a two mile section of a Texas highway and on the first Saturday of each month you get out there with a group and you are provided with bags and you pick up the trash on the sides of the roads.  It is always amazing to me to drive to church on the first Sunday and see the huge mounds of trash bags at the signs waiting for pick up.
While I am VERY thankful for the folks who do this, it disgusts me that people are such PIGS and cannot even throw their trash in a dumpster or can somewhere when they arrive.  It makes me sad that “Adopt a Highway” is even necessary.
I put up my signs and decided that I am going to make a trip back out to my listings and pick up the trash in front of them, it is the least I can do to make them more attractive and perhaps if the neighbors see me cleaning up the place, perhaps they will get out there and do their part.
I find it bothersome that the people who own property in this neighborhood and have to drive through this trash every day haven’t done something such as the neighborhood association getting the people out there in force to clean up and post signs about litter to at least let the offenders know they are being watched and that this behavior is not acceptable.  Perhaps as an interested real estate professional I should contact them and plant a seed...

Jeani, That's awesome that you are going back... a waste of your valuable time though due to other's insensative carelessness.. My son and I have picked sections of streets we walk and cleaned them up from time to time because I can't stand jogging by them in the mornings and see mounds of trash... Thanks for the rant! I am right there with you!

In some of our neighborhoods the residents keep all of the trash picked up. It would be nice if all neighborhoods did this.

My son is a boy scout, Star Rank...working toward Eagle and he is just like me...in fact when we float the river in New Braunfels, he collects the empty beer and soda cans and puts them in the trash when we get to the end of the float. Makes me proud!

Jeani: We also see quite a bit of trash along the main road that we travel here at Canyon Lake.  We see many volunteers out picking up trash during the summer when visitors come and throw trash along the roadway. They should stop and deposit the trash in the supplied trash cans, but continue to throw it from the car window.

I agree Don't Mess With Texas signs are a good reminder of what folks should do.

Too many people just don't care and laziness rules.  Great of you to take a stand and a bag!

Good for you!  Maybe you can be an inspiration to the community.  Sometimes it just takes one person to make a difference.
