Sponsored by Friends of the Desert Mountains, The Wildflower Festival on Saturday, March 5, 2011, celebrates the desert and its spring wildflowers with a variety of entertainment and activity at The Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument and Visitors Center on Highway 74 in Palm Desert. Qualified volunteer trail guides will be leading hikes on the nearby trails going out from the Visitor Center, pointing out wildflowers and giving information on the flora and fauna of the area, and perhaps even a little bit of Coachella Valley history.

Even if you are not up to hiking there are plenty of other activities to enjoy. Dave Heveron will be performing at the festival as will local rock band, The Arrangements. A wine tasting from 10:30am to 4:00pm is offered for $10.00 and includes a commemorative wine glass. Photography and landscaping presentations will be occurring throughout the day on various techniques and equipment to use to help you capture that spectacular shot or create your beautiful desert garden.

The event organizers promise plenty of food and beverages plus vendors and exhibitors will be there with goods and products for home and personal use. Renowned local authors will be on hand to discuss their literary works and autograph book purchases.

Proceeds from Saturday's Wildflower Festival benefit The Friends of the Desert Mountains, an organization that has been the leader in conservation of the mountains surrounding The Coachella Valley for over twenty years. They are the largest private conservationist in the valley owning more than 14,000 acres and partnering in the preservation of over 40,000 acres. The event is open from 9:00am to 4:00pm and admission is free. There is no parking at the monument but free parking and shuttle are available St. Margaret's Episcopal Church in Palm Desert on Highway 74. For more information call (760) 862-9984.
