Doraville, Georgia is trying to plan for the future...as hard as that may be in these economic times. But we all know the importance of a plan.

The Planning Team, lead by Tunnell-Spangler-Walsh and Associates laid out the long term plans for the Town Center of Doraville, and of course, the crown jewel...the currently shuttered General Motors Plant. The final presentation was held last week to a small crowd of city officials and local residents. (Unfortunately, I missed this meeting!) The story was featured (briefly) in the AJC

Can you just imagine this......

Doraville GM Plant

Becoming THIS.....

Doraville GM Plant Concept

I've known about the closure of this plant since it was announced in 2005, and then when General Motors announced the sale of the Doraville Plant. And since that time, I've written several articles about the plant.

The real uniqueness of this site cannot be overlooked...

  • Largest tract of land INSIDE the I-285 Perimeter
  • MARTA Transit line ends at the site (It would be the area to the left where you see the pink colored buildings in the picture above)
  • Directly adjacent to I-285 (visiable on the right side above) as well as access to I-85
  • Easy access to Midtown Atlanta via either MARTA (yes let's be green) or I-85

The City of Doraville City Council is suppose to vote on the proposed plan at the Council meeting March 21. Let's hope politics are put aside for the betterment of Doraville and this plan starts to move forward.

It will definitely be interesting to see what ultimately becomesof the site.  It seems as though the development for N Druid Hills and Briarcliff has been put on hold.

I have a friend who works for Orton Industries near there, I know he'd like to see this happen and it certainly would be new jobs and good for the area.  Keep us posted if you hear more.

Rodney: The Sembler project on Briarcliff hit tons of resistance...the streets in that area simply can't handle more traffic. And they've had such a time with the buildout on TownBrookhaven that it will be awhile, if ever, that the Briarcliff gig gets out of the ground.

Tammy: It almost gives me chills to think what would happen to Doraville if this project moves forward! And I mean in a good GREAT way! It would really put this little burb on the map!

It would be great to get something moving on that site.  I was hoping for the new Falcons stadium to be built there but the powers that be seemed to have nixed that idea.  Thanks for posting, it is a great site that needs developing.

Gary: for those that live around the area, a NO stadium is a HUGE blessing! What do you DO with a football stadium when it's not is use with acres of parking and nothing going on.

The residents of Doraville would of never gone for that baby!
