Matthew 5:6 (New International Version, ©2011)
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
Jesus tells us that we will be filled if we seek (hunger and thirst) after His righteousness. But "filled" with what? Happiness?
But if "happiness" is what we are filled with, why wouldn't Jesus just say we should hunger and thirst after "happiness"?
Have you ever sought after or hungered after happiness? It can be fleeting can't it! A new car or a new house seems like that should be enough to make one very happy. But when you seek after a new car, house, a boyfriend/girlfriend, whatever you may seek, after you get that thing, then you may still not be satisfied or filled. You may even wish you could send it back!
So if it is not "happiness" what does Jesus mean "we will be blessed and then filled" if we seek his righteousness?
Well, we know that God does not want us to be happy without Christ, and He allows us to experience "unhappiness in our lives" in the same way we receive pain, when we step on a nail. Pain tells us something is wrong, and when we are "unhappy" then we should also realize that something is wrong!
The Beatitudes are written in a "progression", so perhaps verse 7 will give us a very good clue as to what we are filled with if we seek (hunger and thirst) after righteousness.
So let's read the next verse:
Matthew 5:7 Blessed are the merciful for they will be shown mercy.
So there is our clue: Filled with "Mercy"
So we hunger and thirst for righteousness and we are filled with Mercy. (Forgivness) Mercy comes from knowing Christ as Lord and Saviour. And after we have His Mercy, then we can show mercy (forgiveness) to others.
Happiness is not something we receive by hungering for it, but it is something we can receive by serving (showing mercy towards others) the Lord.
So we could say "Know Christ, Know Mercy - No Christ, No Mercy"
