Broadway Across Atlanta has announced its 2011- 2012 season lineup for the Fabulous Fox Theatre. Of the six shows being presented, four are Tony winners for Best Musical. Those include Les Misérables (1987), Jersey Boys (2006), Billy Elliot: The Musical (2009), and Memphis (2010). The widely popular Wicked was a 2004 Tony nominee for Best Musical.
The season will open on November 29, 2011 with Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical. Most shows typically run one week. For this season, three shows will enjoy multiple week runs. Billy Elliot will run for two weeks, with Jersey Boys playing for three, while Wicked will captivate audiences for four weeks. Four of the six shows are also still enjoying their Broadway runs. Those are Billy Elliott: The Musical, Jersey Boys, Memphis, and Wicked.
Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! The Musical, November 29 -December 4, 2011
The musical has had several productions since its November 1994 world debut at Minneapolis's Children's Theatre Company. The show was successfully presented again in 1995 and 1998. San Diego has staged an annual production every year since 1998. Its Broadway debut came on November 8, 2006. Additional Broadway, touring, and Los Angeles productions followed in 2007-2010.
Memphis, January 31 - February 5, 2012
Memphis has been playing at the Sam S. Shubert Theatre since its October 19, 2009 opening night. Set in Civil Right era Memphis, the musical explores a mixed-race couple. The musical went on to win four Tony Awards. They included Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Orchestrations. The production also won 4 Drama Desk Awards and 4 Outer Critics Circle Awards.
Billy Elliot: The Musical, March 14 - 25, 20 12
November 13, 2008 was opening night at the Imperial Theatre. The Broadway show follows a successul production in London's West End. Billy Elliot is a story about a Northern England coal miner's son. He dreams of trading boxing gloves for ballet shoes. The muscial won 10 Tonys, 10 Drama Desk Awards, and 7 Outer Critics Circle Awards. Part-time Atlantan Sir Elton John provides the music for the show.
Les Misérables, April 24 - 29, 2012
The show had its world premiere in Paris in 1980. An English version opened in London's West end in 1985 where it still plays today after 10,000+ performances. A Broadway production opened March 12, 1987 and played until May 18, 2003. This spanned 16 years and 6,680 performances making it the 3rd longest running production in Broadway history. The story follows the characters as they struggle for redemption and revolution in early nineteenth century France.
Jersey Boys, May 22 - June 10, 2012
Jersey Boys has been playing at the August Wilson Theatre since its opening night on November 6, 2005. The show takes you through the rags to riches story of Frankie Valli & the Four Seasons. It is also a four time Tony Award winner along with two Drama Desk and three Outer Critics Circle Awards.
Wicked, September 14 - October 9, 2012
Wicked has been playing to sold out audiences at the Gershwin Theatre since its opening night on October 30, 2003. Learn the true story of what really happened before Dorothy dropped in to Oz. The musical won 3 Tony Awards including Best Leading Actress in a Musical. It also won 6 Drama Desk Awards and 4 Outer Critics Circle Awards. Several other domestic and international productions have also been opened to great success.
