Paying it forward in big ways and small in a doctor’s office in

Carroll County, MD

Inspired by Donna Forester, a fellow Realtor® and active ActiveRain blogger (you must read her “I’m Calling My Own Shots, with a twist!”), I was reminded of this past Thursday.

I spent a good part of the day with my Dad. We were an hour ahead of schedule (because the restaurant did not have crabs. Darn!) An hour isn’t enough time to really do anything, so we went to the doctor’s office to wait our turn.

Paying it forward Carroll County, MDWhen we arrived at the doctor’s office, it was empty with the exception of one elderly lady having lunch. Several chairs were taken up by bags of groceries. I ventured a guess that the office was “closed for lunch.”  Dad & I sat out of the way and resolved to wait patiently for his appointment, rather than chance being late. I thought to myself, one of two things, this lady is making a planned organized trip running her errands and chose not to schlep all the way home with her groceries before her doctor’s appointment. OR I was witnessing a random act of kindness, a pay it forward moment.

A few minutes passed and one of the women in the office came out to check on the elderly woman. She asked if she was enjoying her lunch, told her to take her time when she was ready, the office gal would call for the bus.

In Carroll County we have a bus/van service that’s called Cats – Carroll Area Transit System; it’s a nonprofit, door to door service for the community.

Anyway, the gal from the office proceeded to show the elderly woman what she had purchased for her including the boxed lunch.  Apparently, the elderly woman doesn’t have anyone to help her and had lost 45 lbs. since her last visit. This amazing woman saw the condition of another sole and acted immediately to make a difference.

All I could do was smile & help the women load the bus when it came. The event was heartwarming and genuine.

The doctor’s office, in case you are wondering, was Weiss & Mashburn, ENT in Westminster, Md. I wish I had gotten the womans name so I could honor her properly.

Diane, that's a wonderful story!  One doesn't see that very often.  I think you are doing your pay it forward by taking your dad to the doctor's office.  I imagine you are doing a lot more, too.

Diane, thanks for sharing and reminding us that we don't have to look far to find someone who needs our loving care.

Melissa ~ I know its mind blowing how many people are going hungry. I think the part that strikes me the most is that it’s the people who used to donate regularly that are now impacted.

Bob ~ well said. There are people in need all around us. Everything we can do to help, no matter how small it may be, makes a big difference.
