It is the People - Not the Name that Make a Difference

I was meeting some buyers to see some homes on the real estate market in Milton MA.  There were a few homes they wanted to see and as luck would have it, they all had Open Houses scheduled.  I arrived at the first one a little bit ahead of my buyers.  I signed in, introduced myself to the listing agent & took a look around.  He then asked me which agency I was with - and I informed him that I was with Buyers Brokers Only from neighboring Canton MA.  I then added that I grew up in Milton MA, which I always do when I am in Milton (mainly  to avoid being told all about Milton.  I already know what they are trying to tell me.)

That's when I heard it - a slight disdain - "Oh, I've never heard of that company."  Well, we are relatively new in real estate terms and we are a small company (although we are the largest Exclusive Buyer Agency in Massachusetts) - but really, does any of that matter?  I just smiled and handed him my card. Then I waited for my buyers on the front porch.

It is the people that make a difference, not the name.  I am a buyer agent who prides myself on exceptional customer service and providing value to my buyers.  I have seen great agents who work for small outfits and those who work for the big names.  I have also encountered those who were less than stellar who worked at both places. 

So, regardless of the name, consider the service, representation and value that your agent will provide to you.

Christine, you make a great point just as I am considering changing companies. My company is not offering much in the way of services, so it really wouldn't make a difference. It is all about me.

Christine- You are absolutely correct. People are the difference in Real Estate and in most service orientated businesses. I know plenty of "Big Name" firms that have their share of poor agents, and on the flip side of that I know some outstanding agents that are form small "no-name" brokerage firms.

Hi Christine. I get this a lot also. I work for a very small firm with only a few agents. Everyone there is very professional and we give great service to our clients. I love working for a small firm and I agree that it is the agent who matters, not the big name. Nice post!

Hi office is as good as the agents who work for it.....some buyers/sellers have to learn that the hard way.....the big name brand offices do not necessarily score highly when it comes to doing the best the past I was with a mom and pop office and we were #1 in the one could touch us....

And then . . . did he follow up with "And how many deals did YOU close last year?!?"  Oh, the proverbial pissing tinnkle contests.  Rather than welcome you into the property, and appreciate you showing it to buyers . . . the "OMIF" disease, which seems to be contagious.  (Open mouth, insert foot).  The big names are just that: names.  It's the individual agent that does the work.  If had the pleasure of working deals with quite a few agents that are brokers with the big names.  They weren't that good.
