Why did I buy this thing? And What is it? And why is somebody buying it from me?

Ah yes, the annual rites of Spring - The Yard Sale

It is the theme of our family this year to simplify our lives and reduce the stress and noise.  We are doing great through the first 2 months of the year and last Saturday, we had our first Garage Sale of the year.  I say first because in cleaning out closets, garage shelves, and storage unit, we had more stuff than we could stash in our garage to put out for sale.  So now that we have cleared out a bunch, more will come.  But that is not the theme of this article so I won't get too off topic.

In putting things out for sale, I found stuff that, to be honest, I don't remember buying, nor why I would have bought it nor why I would have boxed it up to take with us from one home to another.

Now I know I spent money on it because well, those horrible Christmas gifts go back before January 15 each year or go in the dreaded regifting box.  So at some point I actually looked at this thing that well, I am not really sure what it is, and decided to open up my wallet and pay for this thing.  And now, I am going to sell it for $0.25 which I am pretty sure isn't going to be at a profit.  And since it is still in the wrappings, I am confident that I never even used it.

By now you are probably laughing and know the thing in your closet/garage/storage that you have that is this thing.  But you don't really.  You see this thing is the thing you don't know about that is in a box in the corner that you know you have taken with you the last 3 moves.  It is in that box, but not on top.  It is under the other stuff you shouldn't have kept this whole time.

But what does this have to do with business or is this just a silly story

This is the part where you can skip to the end or if you want a little tidbit keep reading.  In that back closet of your office is that idea that you wanted to try but never did.  You did all of the work to give it a try but you didn't ever follow through with it.  You either lost the guts to try it, got distracted by the run up in real estate prices or just never could quite finish it off.  Go through those boxes in the back.  Not the ones up front but the ones covered in an inch of dust.

Open up those boxes and go through those ideas.  Throw them away or do something with them, but leaving them back there is just slowing you down.  Get nimble, get streamlined and get busy removing the clutter in your professional life.

And what was that thing anyway?

To be honest, I am not really sure.  It was made out of plastic and looked like a tray from the 60's that car hops used to bring your food.  But it was only 4 or 5 years old at best so it wasn't an antique.  And no it didn't sell so off to Goodwill it went.  I hope they can figure out what it was.

Simplification is good.  Actually doing something with an idea that you know is good is even better.  Way to get us thinking.
