Edina School District Makes A Push To Go Green

Edina School District is making strides in their effort to make the schools in Edina more eco-friendly. Edina High School students are also doing their part by helping to collect things such as paper, plastic bottles, and cans that can be recycled. In 2008 the district began its efforts to go green by creating the Go Green Committee which includes students, parents, staff, and community representatives. The committee has already made changes to the cleaning materials that are used throughout the school. Less toxic cleaning solutions are now used throughout nine of the schools in Edina.

At a recent Edina School Board meeting the board considered a new environmental resource management policy that will be brought back before the board at a later date for action. The policy reemphasizes Edina's School District's commitment to recycling, waste reduction, and the need to save energy. If the policy is implemented it states that it will, "ensure that environmental sustainability is an integral part of district planning, and decision making and daily operations." Composting of waste in Edina's school lunchrooms is another task that Edina has undertaken in its effort to be more eco-friendly.  The process starts by students emptying their lunches once they are finished into 3 different bins: recyclable cans and bottles, trash and organics. The collection of organics alone has reduced the schools lunch trash by 50 to 80 percent and has saved the school an estimated $20,000.

Educating students on the importance of the school districts efforts to go green is done every year, and the students have been more than eager to participate. In fact a few years ago the students urged the schools to expand its recycling collection to more than just inside the classroom

I am always interested in thriving school districts.  So many have declined due to mismanagement or a community's unwillingness to support tax initiatives that support the district.  This program to encourage and teach recycling should be mandatory..... in every district. It has to be taught to the youngest generation as a responsibility, as a citizen in our country, to recycle throughout life. Parents, who do not recycle, as a choice, may learn it from their children! There is HOPE..... thanks for sharing a very positive choice for your school district and the planet... our HOME!
