Laramie, Wyoming Real Estate: The Census Results are In!

Yay!  The 2010 census results are finally trickling in!  Laramie is said to have increased by 13.3%, up to 30,816 people.  "Yee haw!", that's a lot of people! This number does not include the few thousand college students who claim someplace else as home but live here while they go to school.  Overall, the state of Wyoming is up by about 70,000 people to a new all time high of 563,000 for the entire state.

        Wyoming
But for people here who love the general lack of people, don't worry, we still have the smallest population in the nation.

Since I love my 4 minute commute to work and the 7 minute commute to the kids' school, I like our lowest count status!  I wonder if I'm even allowed to call 4 minutes a commute?!

Maybe I'm missing the bigger economic picture....but whether I am or not, the wide open spaces and the lack of people to fill them up are the biggest reason I love our state.

Brenda, I agree with you that the wide open spaces is one of the best features of Wyoming.  It seems strange to be over 500K now.

What kind of state income tax does Wyoming have?  States like mine have the ability to drive people out of our state..

I'll tackle that one, Joe. Wyoming has NO state income tax!

Brenda, I love the complaints I hear about the "commute" here. If it's over 5 minutes, it's worth complaining about, apparently. How quickly we forget the commutes we had in Chicago, New York, Dallas, Denver, etc. before we discovered Wyoming.

I know, Gary, I, too, am still accustomed to having less than 500,000!

That's right, Joe!  Just like Tim said - No state income tax at all, just a bunch of blank spaces on our W-2 forms....

Tim - I think Jackson has grown since the 80's, back then it was pretty much contained in the area that would be "old town" and out by Targhee.  Now I hear there's a whole other valley of houses towards the Idaho direction!  Is that called Jackson as well?  Looks like it's time for you to post again and educate us!  ;-)

Wow, I dad no idea that Wyoming had the smallest population in the country. I always figured that it would be Alaska, or even Idaho.

I've been saving up my posts... Actually, just been crazy busy at work. A big closing, half a dozen new listings, and seven commercial leases being negotiated simultaneously. I don't think I'll see the light of day for another week or two, then I'll be back posting... Right now I'm just brain dead and tired. Off to Lander tomorrow very early in the morning...

Hi William, I know what you mean, I can't figure out how Alaska could possibly have more people ... but I bet if we did it per capita by square mile, they'd win by a landslide!

Well, Tim - I suppose real life and real deals trump points every time!

Brenda,

30,000?  Aren't you getting worried about running out of elbow room?  =)

Hi Brenda, fun to read your post on the population of Laramie and the state.  I came to Laramie to attend the U of W back in 1971.  I stayed one year and returned to the Pacific Northwest.  Beautiful country, but the winter's cold and wind sent me back to the rain.  :) Got my degree and then completed a career in education prior to getting into commercial real estate.  Great memories and still proud to say I was a Cowboy.

Mike - I know, it's rough, but somebody's got to do it....

Joe - I have heard the Pacific Northwest is gorgeous so I can see how it drew you back!

Hi Brenda - I also didn't realize it was Wyoming with the lowest population count! I'm in Texas - wonder how many Wyoming populations would make up Texas? ;)

Hi Kim - Now that is an intriguing question..... I suppose you have a city or two there with more people than our entire state!
