Funny or Strange Real Estate Stories from the Trenches...

How about a little fun for a change?  Today at lunch, several of us were discussing some funny, strange or bizarre stories that have happened to us over the years.  I'll share one with you and hope that some of you might want to share some stories with us.  But first, my story.

Several years ago, my partner and I had two listings on a lake in our town.  One day we went to the property to take photos of the two houses - one was a small cottage and other was a home on the lake itself.  I stopped at the cottage first to explain that we were going to take some photos and we were going to the big house first.  The occupants agreed that this would be ok and we went to take our photos.  After we finished with the big house, we stopped back at the cottage.  It was a hot, August day - probably in the high nineties.  There was a scraggly, old dog on the porch as I walked up to the cottage.  I was holding the dog back with my foot as I knocked on the door.  A voice told me to come in.  I said, "do you want the dog in or out?"  The lady answering said, "It doesn't matter."  So I let the dog walk in with us.  In the next few seconds, several things went through my mind.  As I looked around the room at the renters who were there, there was a grandmother, her adult daughter and the daughters baby who was lying on the floor getting its' diaper changed.  The dog immediately walked over to the baby and started sniffing its face.  Everyone (including the baby) seemed to have a strange look on their faces.  I said to the grandmother, "That is your dog isn't it?"  She answered, "It's not our dog."  I immediately picked up the dog and put him outside.  When I returned to the house, I asked the grandmother, "why did you let the dog in the house?"  She responded, "We thought it was your dog."  I explained to her that we didn't take dogs with us on appointments.

That's it.  It probably seemed funnier at the time.  But what about your stories?

Hi John,

Thanks for the laugh! Makes you wonder about people sometimes.

Try having a broker's open and nobody wanting to go outside to the lovely pool area that had been all redone by the seller's. The reason?  A little common black garden snake decided to cool himself off during our open house!

What a selling point! This beautiful home comes with a built in pet at no additional cost.

F.Y.I.  For those of you that don't know, the reason that Pat Walmsley (comment above) thought this was familiar was because she was the other agent.

John,

Love the dog story.

A few months ago I was out of town on business.  I had a listing in a high dollar community in North Tampa.  A divorce sale and the husband had moved out.  I got a call from a good friend of mine who is an agent at another office who wanted to show the house.  I called the seller, who worked at a strip club in Tampa.  She said it was OK to show, except the left $5,000 in cash on her bed.  I explained to my friend and she agreed to put the cash in a top shelf of the nightstand.  I called the seller and told her "no worries" that I had known this agent for over 15 years and she was honest.  I thought everything was fine.

At 3:30 AM, my cell phone rang. It was my business partner Jason's wife (Jason was with me on the trip and his cell was turned off so she called me).  The stripper was at her front door, PISSED that her $5,000 was gone (she never checked her voice mail) and was looking for me or Jason.  She was screaming at Jasons wife, called the police etc.

When we got on the phone with her and told her to check her voicemail, she was too angry to deal with.  When the police got there, we told the police the story.  She went into the house, looked where we told her on the voicemail and there was her $5,000.

It was very funny when we closed a few weeks later (the couple who say it that day purchased her home) when we closed.  It was not very funny when it happened.  I joked with her at closing that it is a good thing she went to Jasons house at 3:30 instead of mine because if a pretty girl showed up at my house at 3:30, my wife would have kicked her a__ __ to put it nice!
