Duct Tape & Plumbing

Home Inspector with B4 U Close Home Inspections&Radon Testing (www.b4uclose.com)

Ya gotta love those who think that duct tape makes a good plumbing repair.

Erby The Central Kentucky Home Inspector Duct Tape

Here's some duct tape on a plumbing vent pipe in the attic.  BUT, just in case it doesn't work, we'll slip the little red bowl under the joint to catch any water.

Erby The Central Kentucky Home Inspector Duct Tape Plumbing

Here we see a T (serving a sump pump) taped into the main drain line.  I bet there is a least two rolls of tape wrapped around that joint.  No bowl needed.  Hey, any leakage will just fall down to the ground.

Ya gotta LOVE IT!

I think the current owners are a little angry about the thorough inspection you did. They didn't have one done and it cost them $18K.  I, my loan officer and my agent think a home inspection is well worth what I paid.

Thank You for the outstanding job you did on the inspection.  We bought and sold 9 houses and this was the only inspection that was ever done properly.  It was helpful and we will use it to do the repairs with a system, instead of the guess work we usually do.  Thanks again

Maybe they purchased that duct tape cheap. I wonder what genius was responsible for the repairs.

Lol, well the contract probably did not specify how the repairs needed to be done. Funny post, thanks for sharing!

Hi Erby, duct tape may have helped bring Apollo 13 back, but I don't think it is the right fix to the plumbing problems.  I do like the additional spill containment, you know, just in case the duct tape doesn't hold.  Thanks for the chuckle.

Duct tape should be off the market. Mis-use of it is not rare enough.

Erby- I know that you have done a lot more inspections than I have, but I do not see anything wrong with the bowl.  It is only being used as a back up to the duct tape. IF the bowl was the primary drain, it would be an issue.  And the duct tape on the the tee for the sump is ok I think as long as your triple wrap it.  I will have to look that up.

Good catches..... I will send you a picture of the 'attic bucket' I found last week.  It was being used as a primary rain catcher so I had to call it out.
