Accents and Symbols in your Blog
Yesterday I read and commented on Tom Waite's post Kissing Active Rain 
Realtors® See what I just did! He was very excited about learning how to make the Realtor ® sign. He was talking about reading a post by Pamela Seley who had read a comment by Bob Marsh on a post by Diane Mora. In all of this he learned how to make the Realtor® Sign.
Reading the comments before I commented I noticed a comment by John Novak with a link to an article at Penn State titled Computing with Accents, Symbols and Foreign Scripts. Before following the link from John, I went to comment on Tom's post and do the ALT 0174 that he said would make the Realtor® sign. I've always wanted to know how to do that and was very excited.
But it didn't work.
So, I followed the link from John's Comment and read more about adding the symbols. It was very interesting.
First lets start with the Realtor® sign. The instructions are that to use these codes, your computer should have a separate numeric keypad on the right side. If it doesn't you can follow a link to a different method that they recommend. Since my first comment and attempt to use the ALT 0174 was on my laptop without the separate number pad, I decided to go to my desktop and log back in to Active Rain. I revisited Tom's post and tried again. It worked!
In writing this post, I went to Pamela's post to see what she said about it. There Richard Strahm had commented with another way to do the different characters.
Simply go to the start button. Richard said to click on Run and then type in Charmap. On my computer, I clicked on start and then just typed CharMap into the search box and presto there's the Character map with all the different symbols! You can just copy and paste them into the post AND it also gives you the ALT and number version.
So here's a quick Summary:
If you have a Separate Numeric Keypad all you have to do to make the Realtor® sign is hold the ALT key down and type in 0174. When you let go you should have it!
If you don't have the separate numbers, Click Start, then either in the Search or Run, type in CharMap. Find the Symbol you want and click on the Symbol and then Copy. Now you can paste it into your blog post!
Another popular Symbol you might want is the Copywrite© Symbol ALT 0169.
There are hundreds to choose from. You can even write in a different language. I thought the music notes♫ were very fun!
