In fact, a report released just today by real estate market research firm Core Logic indicates that 31% of homeowners in California alone are "underwater" which is a graphic way of saying that they owe more on their home than it is worth.

This housing crisis has been caused by an economic slowdown that then became a recession that then exposed to all or us the frailties of our mortgage and ultimately, our monetary system as a nation and a member of the world banking system. All of this has created a protracted lack of confidence in the economy and more specifically the real estate market currently. Just like a series of dominoes that fall one after the other, the banking system and specifically mortgage lenders have lost confidence in the direction of the economy and the real estate market as well. Now that lenders have lost confidence and have eliminated much of the available financing programs for purchasing real estate, the cycle continues to spiral downward! There is no way you could have caused all this simply by purchasing a home, regardless of whether it is your home or an investment that you rented to a tenant.
