To iPad or Not?

With the release of the new iPad2 it renews the conversation I have going on in my head.  Should I get an iPad or not?  I think I should "want" one, but I know that I really don't "need" one.  I say I should "want" one because it's cute, current and pretty sexy.  When I speak to other real estate agents who have an iPad they can't imagine life without it.  My issue is this, I can imagine life without an iPad because that's my life right now, and do I really need one more thing to put in my already too heavy purse or briefcase?

Other real estate agents say the iPad is usefulwhen they are out with clients and they see a property that isn't on their list to see.  My response to that is that I can pull up a listing on my smartphone.  Plus, chances are, it's not on our list because it doesn't meet their criteria.  I am told that  the iPad is also useful on listing appointments...but so is my laptop.  I can't really see a difference there other than the fact you might look ultra hip in front of a perspective client.  Also, I do a lot of typing so I would have to purchase the separate keyboard...which I heard wasn't the greatest.  Decisions, decisions!

My teenagers are really tired of my discussingthe pros and cons of buying an iPad.  For teenagers I have to admit, they are pretty practical.  "Mom, the keyboard wouldn't work for you.  People use it to store their pictures...kind of expensive for a photo album wouldn't you say? ...and there isn't even a USB hookup...it's really just like a big iTouch...you don't need it".

Of course they make some really valid points...but it's so cute and sleek!

Candy, it's usually the teenagers that want all the latest and greatest! If they're saying negative things, then it probably is worth waiting...

Candy, I'm having the same dilemma, although I am VERY tempted to get one. I like the size of it, it can fit in your purse, unlike your laptop. The first one did not appeal to me because it didn't have cameras. iPad2 is smiling to me:) I say Go for it!

I was in a GRI class for 2 days and the agents who brought their iPAD raved, of course, about it and after some nosey time with them about it, I am hooked on getting one.  It seems to be great during presentations so I have learned so, off I go to get my iPAD.  Good luck Candy, take the plunge;)

Candy, you make a great argument for not getting one. I have to admit that I have been toying around with the thought of purchasing one myself. But, after reading some of your logic and reasoning, I am re-thinking that decision. Our smart phones can do more today, than they did a few years ago. Perhaps, all I need is a new laptop.

Doug, you are right, I really am trying to "justify" the purchase...just not having a lot of luck!

Peg, I thought my teens would be all over it but they don't get it either...kind of strange.

Joanna, I will admit I do like the size, but I don't know if that's enough for me to make the leap.  I'll keep you posted!

Michael, I've noticed a lot of people looking at their iPad's at what I think are inappropriate times...times I think they should be paying attention.  So it makes me wonder if the iPad is just another distraction?

Jerry, the iPad's are extremely tempting but a new laptop might be more practical.  Good luck!

I purchased an ipad 2 last week and I have found countless uses for it. Its just a tool. Any tool you purchase to do a specifct  job, will get it done. It been my experience  faster and easier you can access information the larger the positive effect it will have on your business. Will a buyer decide your the realtor for them because you use an Ipad "NO". Will they enter more information about them selves into an ipad at open house because its a trendy fun device ABSOLUTELY! (true story). Try it, if you don't love it take it back with in the thirty day window. When researching a purchase I would consider the people who HATE it, not the ones who love it.

Is the juice worth the squeeze?

When is the IPAD3 coming out? Didn't the IPAD2 just come out like last week? But Candy I have been thinking about getting one too. Many real estate agents rave about the product. But I don't want to get one just because everybody else is getting one. I want to get it only if I need it not because I want it. Have a great weekend. Great post.
